Navajo Cattle Drive

Thank you for such a wonderful article. I just came back from a two day trek to drive our cattle up into the Chuska Mountains. The Yazzie Spread is about 2 miles to the north of our spread up in the Chuskas. I know about what you wrote about; it truly is a wonderful experience and lifestyle. It is difficult and full of hardships too. My grandfather was a brother to "Acheii". Our old people are passing on, therefore this lifestyle and way of life is being transferred to those of us who are willing to take it on. Daniel and his young gang of cowboys and those with similar beliefs and philosophies are a real asset to the Navajo Nation.

I am a Special Education teacher at Tohaali Community School which is about 10 miles south of Sanostee Day School. You are a good writer. The article took me up to the summits of the Chuskas, I could almost hear the birds chirping, smell the pinions & junipers, hear the creak of the saddle, and feel the hot dusty air. Maybe I'll see you on the trail sometimes. Keep your horse pointed in the right direction and watch out for them Indian Cowboys, Aho. D. N.

Southern Oregon Sheriff Tramples Civil Rights Again

Carl Worden, nothing amazes me with the way that the police department and sheriff's department continuously harass people for no reason. I myself have been continuously harassed for being married to a black man in Medford, Oregon. I am, on a monthly bases, being pulled over by the police for no apparent reason. Just recently I was pulled over and held in my car for an hour by the sheriff's department, with my two young children and husband, for having an air freshener hanging from my rear view mirror. If you know of anyone I can speak to about this that would be great. It is time that the police stop abusing their power and begin being held for their evil ways. Thank You, S. C.
