The Forgotten Militia Amendment:
The Real Collective Right Amendment

By Robert Greenslade & Claude Ellsworth © Nitwit Press

Those groups and individuals opposed to the private ownership of firearms claim that when the Constitution was written, the several States did not have the "right" to maintain armed militias. As a consequence, the States, according to these individuals, adopted the so-called "collective right" Second Amendment to prevent the federal government from disarming their militias. The assertion that the States proposed a so-called "collective right" amendment is correct. Two States did indeed request such an amendment. However, this "collective right" amendment was not the one that became the Second Amendment.

Despite this fact, several legal commentators have attempted to develop the "collective right" interpretation in law reviews written during the past several decades. Their writings have been adopted by modern gun control advocates as the "proper interpretation" of the Second Amendment.

In his law review on the Second Amendment, Ray Weatherup made the following statement: (Read the rest here)

Big Brother is Getting Bigger
By Lady Liberty

In George Orwell's classic "1984," Big Brother was the personification of Big Government. He was always there to protect citizens and to steer them in the "right" direction "for their own good." To maintain the status quo (i.e. government as the ultimate authority), Orwell's Big Brother did everything from rewriting history and redefining language to engaging in constant prophylactic surveillance of citizens on the streets and in their homes.

In the world of "1984," thorough records were kept on each and every citizen, and paranoia and fear alone ensured that Big Brother's control was absolute even when his technological eyes might randomly be turned elsewhere. Those few who dared rail against such things were re-educated using tools ranging from mere propaganda to outright torture.

Is it any wonder, then, that more and more people are talking about Big Brother these days? (Read the rest here)

Going Whole Hog In Just Four Days
By Ed Henry

While the people are caught between the Christmas spirit and paying their heating bills this winter, the Bush administration is going whole hog to run up the national debt.

The U.S. Treasury’s Bureau of Public Debt reports that as of December 6, 2005, the debt has increased $30 billion in just four working days since the beginning of the month. By itself, that’s a record average of more than seven billion a day in new debt.

But it’s much worse – fifty percent worse. (Read the rest here)

PBS Propaganda Piece
By Carey Roberts

I've never heard of a Public Broadcasting Service documentary being slammed by two ombudsmen in the space of one week. But that's exactly what happened to PBS' ill-fated program, Breaking the Silence.

The program, billed as an exposé of divorce courts, said that custody of abused children is often awarded to the abusing parent. Government reports reveal that mothers are more likely than dads to abuse and neglect their children, and that mothers in fact are awarded child custody about 85% of the time - so the documentary producers did have a point. But the ombudsmen peered behind the green velvet curtain and said this time around, the Great Wizard was trying to pull a fast one.

First Ken Bode, ombudsman for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting came out on November 29 with a report that charged the Breaking the Silence claims were "slanted" against fathers, "incendiary," and plain "wrong." (Read the rest here)

How Latins View the U.S.
By Alvaro Vargas Llosa

Many readers will be familiar with the dictum “poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the United States,” uttered by Mexican dictator Porfirio Díaz at the turn of the 20th century. The latest in-depth survey of attitudes and values across the hemisphere conducted by Latinobarómetro, a prestigious research organization, indicates that Latin Americans are now a lot closer to God and farther from the U.S. than in Porfirio Díaz's time.

There has been a gradual erosion of support for the Catholic Church in Latin America. Rather than a move away from religion, this signifies the consolidation of a phenomenon that has been quietly taking place for some years: the rise of evangelical churches. An overwhelming 85 percent of the population of Latin America declares itself religious. The novelty is that 15 percent of the population now declares itself Protestant rather than Catholic. Christmas is for celebrating CHRIST
By James Hall aka SARTRE

We all should know that Jesus was not born on December 25th or during the winter season. Heck, in this secular culture some even argue that HE did not even exist. So why should it be surprising that so many 'PC' devotees' are so dedicated to purging the Savior from the public square? The American empire has become a pagan Saturnlian culture. Saturnlia was the greatest festival of the Roman year, and was marked with great feasting, gift-giving, dancing, playing, and relaxing. Homes were decorated, work was suspended, and there was general merry-making done by all.

Only an odd fellow would seek to defend the practice of a pagan celebration. But that is exactly what the elves of evil secularism want you to do. Their objection is directed towards a simple objective. Remove Christ from society. Those gnomes of multifariousness fanaticism have no room for the array of Christian believers. Their version of tolerance requires that the intention and purpose for the Good Shepherd tradition must serve up lamb upon the altar of diversity. A tree as a symbol is not their problem. No, it is the idea that a land settled as a Christian country must forgo that heritage for the sake of the multicultural high priests of acceptable and appropriate attitudes.

Libertarian Commentary on the News for the week of 11 to 17 December 2005
It really doesn’t seem like Christmas, despite the annual culture wars continuing to grow more and more intense, and bad weather hitting like a sledgehammer. Still, as the end of the year rushes upon us, we should take time to reflect on the cause of liberty in this land, and throughout the world, and this week, pause to recall the importance of such documents as the Bill of Rights (National Bill of Rights Day is December 15th).

Culture Wars

Ethical quagmire for environmentalists: Choosing a Christmas tree
San Francisco Chronicle
"The cultural minefield of December has another politically loaded question to tiptoe around: Will you purchase a real tree or an artificial one? And then, what will you call it? Your answer will speak to your commitment to protecting American jobs, reducing the trade deficit, preventing environmental destruction, helping us breathe and, of course, showing where you stand on the Rev. Jerry Falwell's efforts to counter what he calls the anti-Christian 'war on Christmas.' The choice between real and not real is especially painful for some environmentalists. Either they desecrate the Earth and chop down a tree or buy a fake one that's full of landfill-clogging polyvinyl chloride, which is kryptonite to greenies. Salting a tree with pesticides, then chopping it down for a mere two weeks of display time isn't a great option." (12/15/05)

More reason to hibernate for the winter – to avoid “trauma” like this.

Mama's Note: One alternative that wasn't mentioned here is buying a living tree, then planting it outside after the holiday. I did this so often I wound up with a mini forest, but those who don't have much room for more trees should be able to find a park or someone willing to give it a home after the tinsel is packed away again. Some people buy a small tree and plant it in a good sized tub. It can be left outside (just remember to keep it watered well) and brought in for Christmas each year until it is too big to handle. Then you need to find it a home in the open ground and buy another small tree. Yes, it's a lot more work, but with the advantage of having a real tree without cutting it.

As for what you call it; why should you care what anyone else thinks?. Call it whatever you want. (Read the rest here) (Two full pages!)
