Democrats Play the Commerce Clause Card at Robert's Confirmation Hearing
By Robert Greenslade

It's funny that you think Republicans are any more interested in reducing the size of government than are Democrats. The Republicans have all three houses of government, and I see only drunken spending and looting of the Treasury, with no accounting. Look for reports of a trillion dollars (not a typo ) in "missing money" from the Defense Department. Other than that, thanks for the info. Also note that Hamilton seemed to have a different take on it, which is counter to what Jeff and Madison said. I'm not sure what to make of all this. Joe Bobb

Joe-if the Republicans had asked the same questions I would have used a different title. Where did I say that party wanted to reduce the size of government? The article stated that neither party in the Senate would allow a potential justice to curb federal power under the Commerce Clause. It just so happened that the Dems peeing their pants over Roberts because they thought he might share Justice Thomas' call for a roll back of federal power under the Commerce Clause because it does not comport with the original intent. FDR, a democrat, was a mover and shaker in altering the original intent of the Commerce Clause and that is a fact. The first thing out of Feinstein's mouth when Bush put forth the Meyers nomination was where does she stand on the Commerce Clause. They will conduct themselves in the same manner when Bush puts forth his replacement for Meyers for the reasons stated above and you can take that to the bank-Bob

America Disgraced! George Bush's Legacy
by Ted Lang

"Do people even realize that health care is becoming MANDATORY for EVERYONE, a virtual government ownership of your body and mind? Ownership of the soul can't be that far off." - I don't believe in this statement, I'm sorry. Do you have any idea how many people are not able to get health care? Can you show me a statistic that proves this true? I am one of the millions in our country that needs health care and is not able to obtain it. If our government really wanted it to be mandatory and be in control of our body and mind then they would allow people such as myself to obtain health care with my condition. The Provincetown Model
By Lee Robinson

I enjoyed your writing very much. I wonder if you have thought of publishing this in the Banner? Sounds like Gresham's law http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gresham's_Law J.M.

I used to write a column for the Banner but when I moved out of Provincetown they were no longer interested in publishing my stuff. They consider themselves a local paper and want local writers.

Unconstitutional VAWA Law Helped By A Propaganda Ploy
by Carey Roberts

Today (10/5/05) the Senate votes on whether to allow VAWA to expire. Yes! Let it die! Please, help get the word out! Here is what I wrote my senator. Dear Senator Boxer, I have lived the discrimination legalized by the "Violence Against Women Act". Here in Butte County, (California), the judiciary is so poor and corrupt that it seems to ONLY enforce laws that have grant money attached to them. This means that VAWA motivates corrupt professionals to victimize men with evidence-free hearings that find men at fault because that is what the grant money funds! I have spent the better part of the past 5 years defending myself against evidence-free and totally false violence allegations. It has literally ruined my life. It has abused my daughter who has, essentially, lost a loving parent through legal violence. Once the system has committed itself to a characterization of a male as "an abuser", they then must stick to this account or look that much more unjust. If the Congress wants to subsidize VAWA through grant money, they had better require that perjury be strictly enforced. The problem with VAWA is that poor judicial systems are motivated to prosecute men just to raise money through the federal grants VAWA authorizes. This onerous legislation is just the most blatant example of how the United States has institutionalized misandry. This is systematic gender apartheid; it should be recognized as the evil it has become. Please, let VAWA expire! Sincerely, John B.

The Day After Tomorrow - Movie review

You had me up until you called Emmy's lips "smoochy collagen lips"; Miss Rossum is probably one of the smartest people in Hollywood and one of the least fake. To compare her to Jolie is a crime even greater than Whitey-bashing!! Adam

Kill Bill volume 2 - Movie review
by Rocky D

You assert that the "left" would have a fit if Pai Mai was talking down to a "negro." You are assuming this why, because something like this never happened in a Terrintino film? Well you need to, that is if no one else has told you, watch Pulp Fiction. Do you not remember the part where Tarintino's character asked Samuel Jackson and John Travolta if there was a sign outside his house that said "dead n**ger storage." This happened, and the collective "left" which you refer to, did not have a fit. Ultimately your ideas are just paranoid jibber jabber. Feeling a little guilty? I don't even see how your point is relevant. Why do you randomly bring up associations between whites and blacks when that's not even the issue in the Kill BILL series. You need to relax. Ki

First off I would like to say that although I am a liberal I do not judge your opinions based on your political inclinations. I would ask that you do the same. Believe it or not, Tarintino's epic (yes it is an epic) is not a political rant meant to forward liberal goals and/or make fun of Caucasians. For instance, Pai mei is intended for comedy with his extremely exaggerated bias. Only one with no sense of humor would construe his character as a as serious critique on American culture. Your arguments reveal that you have no experience in actual film making and/or directing, you say "superfluous blabbery" and "only a 90 minute film" when not only do the extended scenes lend substance to the film but also meet theater requirements, which I can only assume you are ignorant of. Also you are incensed by Tarantinos style: "too much of his childhood in front of a TV watching Kung Fu flicks, spaghetti westerns," making it seem like a mistake when even a child could tell that these references to culture are intended. But far more importantly, the main detractor from your rhetoric is your extremely skewed political bias which has no place in rating a movie: "“Kill Bill” – isn’t that the title of Hillary’s book?." By implementing this bias you only manage make your conclusions less credible and even embarrass your political party, making them seem like the red necks they are so often stereotyped as. If you ever wish to sway someone to your point of view besides yourself, you may want to consider actually learning something about film......and getting a sense of humor Glen S.

Gun Control Equals Murder
by Bob Wallace

My name is Connie K. and I am a criminology student. On October 11, 2005 I am to travel to Bonne Terre, Mo to interview Marlin Gray about the murders on the Chain of Rock's Bridge. This is strictly for my studies. I would also like to interview a family member of the victims. Do you know how I can get hold of one of them? Connie K.

What's strange is that Gray didn't push the girls off the bridge, just raped them. The guy who pushed them off is still alive. It's claimed he's "retarded" because his IQ is 70. He knew enough to try and cover his crimes up, though. Bob

Lawyer's Advice - No Charge
by Carl Worden

All good info except for #2 - credit cards must be signed to be valid. American Express, for one, confirmed that if there is no signature, the card is invalid and a merchant should refuse to honor it. They say this is also stated in their cardholder agreement. LM F.

This is excellent information. A lot of things that just slip by when it actually happens to you. Whether just by a lost wallet or a stolen purse. Thank you so much. Shenac

Abstinence Vs Sex Education
by Carl Worden

"... parents do not “teach” their children about abstinence from sex before marriage: They enforce it. If you don’t want your underage teen daughter to get pregnant, you simply don’t allow her to. Which part of that don’t you get?? I love it! You go dude! I'm writing an essay about abstinence. You have provided me with the perfect argument material against sex before marriage. Terri C.

Wow! This is so powerful and inspiring.... I think that as I grow up and raise a family someday I will always remember this essay and story.. Kristen (age 17)

Staying A Wrong Course (Letter to the editor)

If you are hitting yourself in the head with a hammer, using heroin or having unprotected sex with a HIV positive person, my guess is that you, the reader, would believe that staying the course regarding these self-destructive behaviors would be wrong. The same basic argument holds true for our approach to the Iraq War. The Bush White House and his Republican supporters are urging American citizens to “stay the course” in Iraq. Unfortunately, the course they are advocating is self-destructive to the American nation.

The invasion of Iraq was bad policy from day one. The reasons for the invasion advocated by Bush were mistakes at best, deliberate lies at worst. Iraq had no significant stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction. Iraq played no significant role in Islamic terrorism aimed at the United States. Iraq was not a serious threat to neighboring countries when the invasion was launched. Saddam Hussein was certainly not behind the 9-11 terrorist attacks. Larry Beinhart has documented all these assertions in his new book, Fog Facts.

The only logical reason that might justify an invasion in an unbalanced mind was the fact that Iraq had massive amounts of untapped crude oil. Of course, it is against international law to invade another nation to gain control of their natural resources. A basic principle of international law is that wars that are not defensive in nature are illegal. By international law, attacking militarily a nation that has not attacked you first is illegal. If oil was the reason for attacking Iraq, it was not helpful to American consumers. Sadly, Iraq is currently producing 1.9 million barrels of oil a day. Before the 2003 invasion, Iraq was producing 2.6 million barrels of oil daily. Additionally, the war is consuming huge quantities of oil by our military further tightening world oil supplies and driving up prices for American consumers. Iraq oil production does not even come close to funding the war or Iraq reconstruction efforts as the war backers once claimed it would. American taxpayers got stuck with a huge, completely unnecessary bill from Bush’s Iraq misadventure. It is difficult by international law to justify the invasion of Iraq by the United States.

I do not see how “oops, we made a mistake” concerning weapons of mass destruction is a legal justification for a military attack. It is not legal under international law to attack another nation just to depose a leader who does not like our government. It seems possible that leaders of our government responsible for launching the invasion could in theory be charged as war criminals. Bush could use his pardon powers domestically to shield his Administration and supporters from criminal prosecution over breaking American laws. The federal judges appointed by Bush might protect Bush from personal domestic prosecutions (which might help explain some appointment choices) for crimes he might commit in office. However, international war crime prosecution is not under the control of the Bush White House or American courts.

Certainly, the United States should not be “staying the course” concerning policies that could potentially cause a sitting or former American President to be charged with international war crimes. The reputation of the American nation is important enough for us to admit our mistakes and withdraw from Iraq. On the practical side (excluding international law considerations), the current Iraq policy is a failure. Our reputation worldwide is in serious decline because of Iraq. The Bin Laden organization is using our actions in Iraq to recruit terrorists and undermine pro-American Arab governments. The damage to American interests was recently demonstrated by a Pew global public opinion poll in Indonesia. Indonesia is the predominantly Moslem nation with the largest population in the world. It is not an Arab nation. Before the Iraq invasion, the majority of Indonesians held favorable opinions of America. Currently, only 15% of the Indonesian population holds a favorable view of the United States. Fully 80% of Indonesians believe that the United States might attack their nation.

Despite the often repeated claims of the Bush Administration, there is no evidence that our policies will ever establish a stable, democratic, pro-American government in Iraq. Despite spending hundreds of billions of dollars and losing the lives of nearly 2,000 brave American soldiers, Iraq is not safe or stable. Ethnic violence is on the rise. Civil war seems more and more likely. Basic services like electricity and running water are often still not available. There is no reasonable end in sight to the costs in taxpayer dollars and lives if we continue “staying the course” advocated by the Bush Republicans.

It is time for Bush to admit his mistake in launching his Iraq War. It is time for Bush to admit that his course in Iraq in the aftermath of the invasion has been a dismal failure. We cannot find our way as a nation out of this mess until we admit our mistakes and seek a new course. We do not need to keep whacking ourselves in the head with the hammer of a failed Iraq policy! Stephen Crockett (co-host of Democratic Talk Radio http://www.DemocraticTalkRadio.com ).
