The Big Fat Republican Supreme Court Lie

Will John Roberts’ supreme Court (1) confirmation process be a slam dunk? Or will it be nasty, brutish and excruciatingly long, replete with lurid exposes of his undergraduate escapades and video rental records?

No matter what happens, do not get too jazzed about Mr. Roberts. If the Republican Party’s history of judicial nominations is any indicator, he will be a disaster. How do I know this? Let me explain.

Another Scandal Brewing At The UN

In a long-awaited decision, President Bush finally named tough-talking John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. And not a day too soon, as the U.N. General Assembly is set to reconvene in September.

The problems at the United Nations are legion: the Oil-for-Food scandal, the sexual escapades of the U.N. peacekeepers, the laughingstock that the Human Rights Commission has become, the U.N.'s utter failure to stem the AIDS epidemic, and many others.

But there's another scandal that people are trying to keep under wraps -- the fact that dozens of agencies and offices sprinkled throughout the vast U.N bureaucracy have become base camps for ideological feminism. (Read the rest here)

Israelis gather to fight removal of Gaza settlers

"Thousands of right-wing Israelis rallied near the Gaza Strip border last night ahead of a threatened showdown with the army and police over the government's plan to remove all Jewish settlers from Gaza and bulldoze their homes later this month. About 15,000 soldiers and policemen were deployed near the Gaza border, and around the Israeli town of Sderot where the rally took place, to prevent a last-ditch attempt to stop the removal of about 8,000 Jewish settlers by marching into the Gush Katif settlement block. Police said about 25,000 people attended the rally." (08/03/05)

"Right-wing" is used by the Guardian as a pejorative - many of these people would be considered liberals by most objective observers. Why are they "right wing"? Because to the mainstream media, anyone who dares to defy government is right-wing and evil. The potential for open rebellion is strong: look at the ratios: 32,000 settlers and supporters, versus 15,000 (nervous and unsure) troops. If open violence does break out (and I think it very possible), figure on about 1/3 of those troops "deserting" to the other side, and now you are faced with 37,000 to 10,000: a 4 to 1 advantage. This could then lead to a massive attempt at intervention by the Palestinian "security forces," and even a general war. (Read the rest here)
