July 27, 2005 We are not an Empire. Is Viagra covered by your health insurance and do women likewise get birth control coverage? Are you making more money than you did five years ago and does it buy anything? How many people crossed our borders illegally last week? How many millionaires left the country? Will the baby-boomers bust Social Security? Will Medicare ever turn to its $296 billion trust fund? Who are you going to vote for? A fuel gage broke on the space shuttle. Gas prices are going to rise to three dollars a gallon. Have you talked to Microsoft in India yet? Is there really a real estate bubble? Will your company move overseas? Is there really a surplus from your payroll taxes? Have you got enough Ritalin for your overactive child? Will more hurricanes hit Florida ? What’s the minimum wage nowadays? Will China buy Unocal? Are the French a bunch of kooks? Is the dollar falling in value worldwide? What has your union done for you lately? Did Robert Blake really leave his gun in the restaurant? Are doctors and patients abusing Medicare? Where are you going on vacation this year? Is inflation in check? Will Congress pass CAFTA and what is it anyway? How many judges are on the Supreme Court and who are they? How many insurance companies folded last September? Will HillBillary run for president in 2008? Is global warming real? No school shootings lately, are we overdue? What happened to gangs like the Black Panthers? Are they “being all they can be” in Iraq ? How many American manufacturers have moved to China? Is the national debt really a problem? Will suicidal ragheads bomb our cities? Will those red octagonal signs on street corners be changed to read “pause?” Will speed limit signs say “recommended?” Were Janet Sterno’s helicopters and tanks from Fort Hood an act of Posse Comitatus? Will we sell nuclear secrets to India while condemning Iran for the transgression of getting the same from Russia? Who wouldn’t develop nukes after being called part of the “axis of evil?” Have we got much to sell besides weapons of mass destruction while our balance of trade hits new record deficits? What’s going to happen to poor Amber Frey and will she and Karl Rove get together? Whatever became of Ollie North’s secretary Fawn Hall? Whatever happened to Ronald Reagan’s dream to build a new canal through Nicaragua ? Is Iraq really a quagmire like Viet Nam where we had to stop the spread of communism and where we also sent "advisors" to train their people to fight for themselves? We are not an Empire. Is anyone in Congress responsible for anything? Has the torture problem been solved or are cameras just not allowed anymore? Is there really such a thing as whistleblower reward? How many beans are in this jar, or has that been changed to how many pharmaceutical lobbyists are in Washington? Will our middle class really end up working in rice paddies? Who are these maintenance workers who claim bombs went off in the basement of the Trade Towers? Is Kobe Bryant still playing basketball? Are we winning the war on drugs? Will the Patriot Acts be renewed? Is Guantanamo still protecting the Windward Passage from pirates? How can a communist country like China beat us at our own game of free enterprise? Could it have anything to do with banks being owned by the state? How can Cuba have a literacy rate of almost one hundred percent while ours ranges at about seventy? How is Elian Gonzales doing now that he’s back with his natural father? Why did New Zealand close more than 5,400 school boards in one day and then establish trusts in every school with parents as trustess and in charge of the money for education? Are bureaucracies and unions more concerned with their own survival and expansion than doing anything good? Did Tony Blair lie to the British people about Iraq? King George says we are not an Empire. If smugglers can bring hundreds of tons of cocaine into America , what’s keeping tons of anthrax out and what does “home grown” have to do with the marijuana business or the family farm’s cash crop? Whatever happened to the case of the two boys killed on the railroad tracks by the airport in Mena, Arkansas? Did the Bush brothers know Barry Seals? How is Clinton's brother doing? Who paid to put light bulbs back in the White House? Who’s paying for the Clinton homes in New York State? How did a communist country with half our population engage us in a Cold War, a Space Race, an Arms Race, and a Peace Race for more than forty years? Why are we cutting military bases at home while expanding our more than 725 bases in foreign countries? Remember, we are not an Empire. And why does “Usama been forgotten” claim he can bankrupt us? Did the Nazi occupation forces refer to the French underground as insurgents and terrorists? Whatever happened to Ollie North’s “freedom fighters” in Nicaragua where Reagan never did get his canal? Why is the theme song of the Marines “From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli?” Why do the courts in Chile want Henry Kissinger? Why do we have so many generals on television nowadays? Are Don Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney really running the country? How can the rest of the world hate us when they must see the same John Wayne reruns and Law & Order movies we’re shown over, and over, and over again? Which show is the real portrait of life in New York City, the aging adolescents of Friends or NYPD Blues? How come we’re not shown the famous “Dr. Strangelove” spoof on nukes but we’ve got a “nuclear option” on filibusters greasing the verbal wheel for Bush’s push to develop “nucular” weapons for field forces and space? Who are the real terrorists in this world? But remember, we are not an Empire. And while you’re at it, you might ask yourself why the Internet, probably the only free organ of news in this “information society,” is developing into a voice that responds to every bit of distraction coming out of Washington and is rapidly losing its ability to separate the wheat from the chaff. What’s more, William Greider just came out with a brief article titled "America's Truth Deficit” that describes the economic and labor crisis perfectly. News that's not being mentioned but he offers little if any hope for recovery and states that “to describe plausible remedies is to explain why none are likely.” How can we expect solutions from a two party cult system that openly and blatantly steals our retirement money, spends it willy-nilly, and then appoints and approves one of Enron’s supporters to head the Securities and Exchange Commission making doubly certain they are not punished?
