The Bum's Rush, and I Mean Literally
by Bob Wallace

I'm not a violent person. I always felt bad as a kid if I got into a fight and beat the kid up (they always started it). I'm not a sadist who gets his kicks from bullying or dominating or hurting people. Yet a few days ago I got to help a cop catch a guy who was running from him -- by my plowing into the guy and bashing him up against a fence with my shoulder -- and I'll have to admit, I really enjoyed it.

Why? Because the guy was a bum and a panhandler, and I've had a my fill of them. My record is being hit up four times in one block by aggressive and sometimes hostile panhanders, whom I just ignore and walk around. Because of this, I am a great believer in the "broken window" theory -- if the police take care of the minor stuff, then the major stuff doesn't happen very much. And one of those "minor things" I am absolutely opposed to is panhandling. (Read the rest here)

Immigration By The Numbers
By Ed Henry

The Census Bureau recently released its estimate of the U.S. Population by five year age groups. It reveals some interesting data, particularly when it comes to immigration.

However, before we get to the immigration implications, let’s take a look at the so-called “baby boomer” myth.

For years, I’ve been saying that the “76 million baby boomer” story is not much of a problem for Social Security. It’s a fear story and one built by never claiming that these are “births above normal” but by omission implying that a huge horde of extra births occurred between 1946 and 1965 when sixteen million lusty servicemen and women returned from the various theaters of World War II. The real number of these births above normal is somewhere between seven and eight million, not 76 million about to wreck havoc on the Social Security system.

Would people be equally stunned if told that 69 million people born between 1946 and 1965 were about to retire? That's about the figure our population would have increased normally and even if World War II had never happened. (Read the rest here)

Boot Max Boot’s Recruiting Plan
by Jacob G. Hornberger

Max Boot, one of the most ardent boosters of the U.S. government’s invasion of Iraq and one of the most pro-empire proponents you’ll ever find, is lamenting the difficulty that U.S. military recruiters are having in signing up young American men to serve in the military. Boot is a weekly columnist for the Los Angeles Times and a former editor at the Wall Street Journal. Given his enthusiastic devotion to the U.S. government’s invasion and occupation of Iraq, Boot rejects withdrawing from Iraq, but he also rejects the idea of a draft because the latter would “dilute the high quality of the all-volunteer force.”

So, what does Boot suggest? In a June 16, 2005, L.A. Times op-ed entitled “Defend America, Become American,” he says that the military should recruit foreigners to do the fighting, dying, and killing in exchange for U.S. citizenship. Yes, you read that right — he didn’t say simply recruit immigrants living in the United States — he said the U.S. military should recruit foreigners living anywhere in the world and make them American citizens in return. Presumably Boot feels that this would not “dilute the high quality of the all-volunteer force.” He even uses the French (!) Foreign Legion as his model. (Read the rest here)

Libertarian Commentary on The News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2005

A lot of articles today seem to be related closely to history - especially to repeating it or making it. Remembering Santana's famous quote, "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it," let's look at today's news and a few juicy comments (my own opinion, and not necessarily those of anyone else - you can be sure!).

Tech & Science News

Solar sail to launch - no, launched!!!
BBC News
A solar sail spacecraft launches on Tuesday, to demonstrate an elegant new way to power interplanetary probes. The Cosmos-1 mission is privately funded - half the money will come from a TV studio - and lift-off will be from a Russian submarine in the Barents Sea. The Planetary Society, based in Pasadena, California, is sponsoring the launch of the $4m (£2.1m) experimental spacecraft. US space agency (NASA) scientists have reportedly expressed interest in the data it will collect.

Mission operations personnel monitoring the spacecraft from the Planetary Society's office in Pasadena cheered as they got word from mission operations in Moscow of the rocket's take-off just after 2045 BST [0445 MDT].

For details, go to http://planetary.org/solarsail/ and drool. This is indeed a private venture, sponsored by Cosmos Studios, and actually about 20 months behind schedule. It will be using a modified SS-N-18, an ICBM, and obviously there is some government involvement, since it is using a Russian submarine. But it is still as grand a scheme as Burt's SpaceShip One! Definitely a historic event, if a very small one (40 kg)! (Read the rest here)
