As to genuinely significant news, there is truly very, very little being published. A few focal points in the world, such as Iraq, North Korea, Syria and the sites of tsunamis draw reports, some politics appears but it's the usual trashy mudslinging rather than mature discussions of issues. Newspaper
circulation is down. Well doo-dah! When there's no competition among
the papers other than to see who digs up the most garbage, as to themes,
all the major papers (owned by a few giant corporations) beat the
same drums. One pretends to be liberal, the other pretends to be conservative,
and out comes support for a totalitarian America we never knew. They
expect people to buy that rubbish? I wouldn't. And I don't. Likewise,
the internet is a wide open field for the writers, ranging from the
erudite who support their contentions to the whacks who are focused
on alien planets whizzing toward our solar system unseen. Some supposed
"former political operatives" spout off sci-fi as though
they had a bug in every conference room and bedroom in Washington,
D.C. and a few at Camp David.

Tuesday, 14 June 2005, is the US Army's official Birthday, celebrating the creation of the force by the Continental Congress in 1774: two years BEFORE Independence. The Army has almost always been the friend of liberty INSIDE the United States, but sadly not outside, whether in the territories of the Indian Wars or overseas in various places. But even in those circumstances, soldiers for years have at least attempted to uphold their oath to preserve the Constitution with their duty to obey Congress and President, while still working for liberty for comrades, family, community, nation, yes, and enemies. They haven't always succeeded, and sometimes it has been less successful than other times. But the biggest barrier to a new American Imperium (neo-con style) may, ironically, be the very soldiers sent to the world to do the dirty deeds. So when you see a soldier (active, reserve, guard, or retired) give them a hug, even if you don't agree with them, and tell them "Happy Birthday." Encourage them to continue to fight for liberty, for freedom, and NEVER betray their honor or their oath. Of course, this is my opinion, like the rest of this column, and not necessarily that of anyone associated with TPoL, RRND, FND, or any other libertarian organization or publication. If you disagree, please tell me. (Read the rest here)
