All the Wrong Answers
By Lady Liberty

Memorial Day, 2005 hasn't really been any different than Memorial Day, 2004. Too many people still consider it a day for picnics, summer fun, and super sales events; too few people remember why we set such a day aside in the first place. As American soldiers continue to fight and die overseas, it's more appropriate than ever that we all stop for a moment to consider their sacrifice as well as all that those who have gone before them have given.

At the same time, our respect for our military men and women is doubtless mitigated by doubts over the "war" in which they're currently engaged. Make no mistake: I support our military troops. I don't necessarily oppose war, and there are circumstances under which I'd quite enthusiastically support it. There are some very good reasons that a nation might find itself at war. There are also some very bad ones. (Read the rest here)

Amnesty Sinking On The Shoals Of Political Correctness
By Carey Roberts

It was a bad week at the office for the bigwigs at Amnesty International. It all began when Amnesty charged that the U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has become the "gulag of our time" and urged foreign governments to investigate and arrest top US officials.

Bush administration officials were quick to respond. "I frankly just don't take them seriously," Vice President Cheney commented on CNN. General Richard Meyers said the AI allegations were "absolutely irresponsible." And President Bush dismissed the charge as "absurd." (Read the rest here)

The Problem Is Socialism and Empire, Not Immigration
by Jacob G. Hornberger

In a speech delivered a couple of years ago, former governor of Colorado Richard D. Lamm made the startling claim that the way to destroy our country is to "turn America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country. History shows that no nation can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures.”

What about Switzerland, a country that has survived centuries, even though its languages and culture are French, German, and Italian? In an article he published previous to the speech, Lamm explained that Switzerland can be reconciled with his amazing thesis because the country “has divided its geography into three separate areas, each of which has a common and dominant language." D-Day was 61 years ago: do you know where your soldiers are today? Well, tens of thousands of them are still on duty in Germany, a Germany whose current serving Chancellor (the same office Hitler held, by the way) recently threatened war if the EU Constitution isn't adopted. Was that just scare tactics (which failed, BTW) to get the French and Dutch (and the Brits) to vote in the Fourth Reich, or was he serious? Of course, since most of our military knife-edge (including much of our National Guard) is busy in Afghanistan and Iraq, if he was serious, the USA won't be able to bail out the UK or France again. Of course, we may not even have enough Guard troops to fight fires this year (fortunately, we seem to have had a good snowfall and are getting some good rains in the West), so maybe a new war in Europe isn't really high up on our priorities. At least, your and my priority, not those yahoos in DC who like to call themselves our leaders. At least that's my opinion; it may not be yours or anyone associated with TPoL, but I can guarantee it ain't that of those busybodies in DC, or Schroeder or Chirac.
Speaking of Europe:

The Decline and Fall of Europe

Straw sees no point in EU election in UK
Foreign Secretary Jack Straw says there is "no point" in pursuing plans for a referendum on the EU constitution after France and the Netherlands voted "No". He told MPs the government had decided to postpone any moves towards a poll.

No foolin'? Gee, who saw THIS coming? Seriously, folks, I like Liam Fox (the Tory shadow Foreign Secretary) and his quote the best: "I can tell a corpse when I see one and this constitution is a case for the morgue if ever I saw one - this is a dead constitution."

Mama's Note: Unfortunately, one of the main characteristics of a politician is the refusal to take "no" for an answer. They are not about to let this drop, you can bet on that. (Read the rest here)
