The polls most often cited in the case of Terri Schiavo asked people if they found themselves to be in her condition, would they want to live that way? Naturally, the majority replied they would not.
Neither would I.
The question that should have been asked is, "If two out of five court-appointed medical experts found you were not in a legally defined persistent vegetative state, meaning they believed you were at least somewhat lucid, would you want to be put to death by slow starvation and dehydration that might take as long as 14 days?"
I think that question would give most people pause.
Two to three. Out of five experts who examined Terri Schiavo, only one broke the tie. Based on that finding alone, Judge Greer should not have ordered Terri Schiavo's feeding tube removed. Two to three said Schiavo was not in a persistent vegetative state, meaning, if they were right, she would experience suffering, excruciating at some times, while awaiting her death, night and day; day and night for two long weeks.
Based on the experts the court appointed, Terri Schiavo had a 40% chance of consciously experiencing her death throes over an agonizingly long 14-day period. Would you want to die that way?
Mob Boss John Gotti, a known murderer who suffered from terminal throat cancer in prison, was placed in a medically induced coma so he would not suffer the agony of his final days. Terri Schiavo was not. I just don't understand it.
If you had a terminally ill dog and you tied the dog to a tree without food or water until it died, you might well be prosecuted and even imprisoned for such a heinous act.
I just don't and won't understand it. What happened in this case was so appalling, inhuman and barbaric, only the sociopath seems to accept it.
And that's my last word on it.
