March 15, 2005 You've doubtless heard the old saying that resolves extremes by finding the "happy medium." And we all know about "shades of grey" as opposed to issues or problems of a purely "black and white" nature. But if we understand and acknowledge these things - and we typically do - —how is it that so much of what's happening in today's society represents the extreme instead? It seems to me much the result of yet another old saying, or more accurately, the absence of it. You see, common sense apparently isn't. (Read the rest here)

Amiss In The United Nations' Gender Health Agenda In 1998, Gro Harlem Brundtland was named as the first female director-general of the World Health Organization. Many hailed her appointment as a long-overdue opportunity to introduce a new ethic of female compassion at the highest levels of the United Nations. Indeed, Dr. Brundtland was a well-known advocate for women's rights and health needs. In 2003 she presented this analysis to the 59th U.N. Commission on Human Rights: "Millions of women accept poor health status as their lot in life and bring up their daughters to do the same. Why? Because they have been ascribed an inferior status and are victims of a persistent devaluing of women's contribution to society." (Read the rest here)

in the Islamic World? President Bush has been crowing about how the policies of his administration are responsible for democratic developments in the Islamic world, but like most politicians, he is claiming credit for progress that has been overstated, that he had little to do with, and that may likely be reversed. In his second inaugural address, President Bush loudly proclaimed his desire to democratize the world. But Bush's touting of his progress toward this goal, and the media's willingness to indulge in the democratic euphoria, are misplaced. (Read the rest here)
