The Fright to Remain Silent - Our Compliant Media
By Ted Lang © 2004

Ignorance is indeed bliss, especially for those enforcing it! The Bush administration has made it abundantly clear that the media will never to be allowed to operate freely or independently.

Astonishingly, even the usually caustic and sarcastic Maureen Dowd, the darling of the “liberal” media, glamorously appointed and anointed to her perch at The New York Times, has blunted her latest word venom salvo directed at her Republican nemesis, George W. Bush. Although Ms. Dowd effectively covers all the bases, she fails to deliver the knockout punch. (Read the rest here)

Feminist Head Games At The United Nations
By Carey Roberts

Ever notice how radical feminism has become a parody of itself?

Case in point: For years, feminists scolded us for the mere mention that some women might be too emotional to handle top leadership posts.

Ironically, those same women forgot to tell us that leading feminists thinkers were actually discouraging women from thinking logically. The reason: gender feminists have long regarded logic and rationality as patriarchal tools for the baleful oppression of women.

No, this is not a joke. (Read the rest here)

Congressional Sadists
B
y Sheldon Richman

Even though April 15 is more than a month and a half away, this is the time of year when people are thinking about and preparing their income-tax returns. So it’s a good time to contemplate this particular bit of oppression under which half the adult population labors.

Many people act as though the income tax and the demands it makes on us are facts of nature. Benjamin Franklin said, “In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes,” but we ought to acknowledge that these are two quite different phenomena. Taxes are an act of will. Death eventually comes despite any preference to the contrary. (Read the rest here)

Libertarian Commentary on The News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2004

Let us again start with some good news on various fronts! Celebrate while we can! At least that's my opinion, if no one else's!

Tennessee: Wheel tax bill goes flat
Knox News [TN]
"Legislation that would allow county commissions to raise wheel taxes without a public vote was shelved Tuesday, with Republican sponsors retreating from their previous support of the measure. Fred Congdon, executive director of the Tennessee Association of County Mayors, said it is a matter of 'local autonomy.' Ben Cunningham of Tennessee Tax Revolt contends that it simply strips people of a right to vote. ... Under law, a county wheel tax can be enacted or increased in two ways: by a 'private act' in the Legislature or by a two-thirds vote of a county commission. When a county commission approves a wheel tax, however, the law also provides that, if enough county voters sign a petition calling for an election, the tax cannot take effect unless it is approved in the subsequent election. The bill would eliminate the possibility of an election petition as well as enactment of a wheel tax by private act." (03/02/05)

And good riddance!

Mama's Note: What in hell is a "wheel tax"? Is that a tax on each wheel of a vehicle in addition to the sales, use tax and all the rest of them? Tennessee needs a REAL tax revolt, that's for sure. (Read the rest of the Commentary here)
