Is Social Security Constitutional
or just Another Usurpation of Power?

By Robert Greenslade © Nitwit Press

After President Bush put forth his proposal to "partially privatize" Social Security, newspapers across the country inundated the American people with editorials and articles defending the present system. The Chicago Sun-Times called Social Security "the most successful government program ever to be invented." Since most Americans, including the staff at the Sun-Times, blindly assume that the federal government was granted the constitutional authority to establish this so-called retirement/insurance program, the origin of Social Security is rarely discussed. In the author's opinion, if the media was functioning as government watchdogs, as opposed to government lapdogs, it would be asking a question that goes beyond any proposal to partially privatize Social Security. Was the federal government granted the constitutional authority to establish Social Security or is it just another usurpation of power? (Read the rest here)

Violence Against Women Act Ignores Epidemic Of Violent Women
By Trudy W. Schuett

In the past few weeks newspapers all over the country have been brimming with accounts of women who engaged in monstrous crimes.

To avoid giving offense, I provide only the sketchiest of details here: Dena Schlosser severed off both of her daughter's arms with a knife. Nathshay Ward starved her three children to death. Kim Tran mutilated her boyfriend in a gruesome act of revenge.

These women don't exist, and these gruesome crimes never happened. (Read the rest here)

Libertarian Commentary on The News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2004

After all the court news yesterday, I don't want Mama Liberty's loyal readers to think we're turning into a court reporter column, so I'll try to start out with some different things, and a bit of a mishmash. Again, I'll start with at least SOME good news, in my opinion (not necessarily that of anyone else!).

Virginia may seek education independence?
Washington Post
Virginia legislators announced they would consider refusing all federal education funding in an attempt to avoid complying with federal rules under the No Child Left Behind Act, reported the Washington Post. Legislators have asked for a cost analysis of how much their state spends to comply with the Act's requirements and the effectiveness of funding their education system with state funds alone, according to the Post. "It's going to cost us a whole lot more to stay in then to get out," said Republican Delegate James H. Dillard II. If the state remains under the control of the Act, Dillard told the Post, "we will have as much control over our public school system as we presently have over health care. Which is basically zilch."

I don't think it will pass, but wow, if it even comes close. How many other states might consider it?
