Beware of Marriage Amendment
By Robert Greenslade © Nitwit Press

Sadly, the controversy over same-sex marriage has reached the point where the Constitution for the United States has become part of the debate. Those supporting a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as a union between a man and a woman are attempting take a document that was written to define and limit the powers of the federal government and use it to define and limit the social behavior of the American people. Irrespective of the reader's views of same-sex marriage, every freedom loving American should be vehemently opposed to any attempt by the federal government to use the Constitution as a hammer to suppress personal behavior that politicians find objectionable. Real Scary
By Lady Liberty

There's virtually no question that something needs to be done to tighten US border control and reform immigration policy. It has been repeatedly pointed out that a lack of border control and visitor entry follow-up was responsible for the presence in America of a number of the 9/11 hijackers (adding insult to injury and illustrating the grave need for reform, the INS approved visas for two of the 9/11 hijackers six months after they flew planes into the World Trade Center). And most states are clear on the fact that illegal immigration is costing taxpayers a bundle. (Read the rest here)

Libertarian Commentary on The News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2004

Today, my character trait for liberty-lovers is "Attentiveness" (as contrasted to distraction). There is a lot to be said about attentiveness, to the news, to events that aren't in the news, and to the ideas of others, even those who are not lovers of liberty. Perhaps we'll see some good examples (or some bad examples to avoid) in our news and commentary. As always, these views are my own, not necessarily those of any other friend of liberty, TPoL, RRND, or anyone else!

Mideast tarbabies
Iraq: On deadly weekend, occupiers launch offensive
Indianapolis Star
"U.S. Marines and Iraqi security forces launched an offensive Sunday against insurgents [sic] in troubled cities west of Baghdad after two days of carnage that left nearly 100 people dead. Meanwhile, Sunni Muslim tribal leaders met to determine their place in a Shiite-dominated Iraqi government." [Editor's note: as usual, US casualties are going largely unnoticed. Between Friday and Sunday, the Department of Defense identified 11 US troops killed between Wednesday and Saturday at TLK] (02/21/05)

I usually don't start out with the Mideast war news, but today this illustrates my character trait so perfectly - the Sunnis have suddenly decided to pay attention to the new government and politics in it - after refusing to play the game for a while, and they are finding their distraction with trying to send the Coalition home can be dangerous, in more ways than one. At the same time, the American public has such a short attention span, that any day without reports of casualties means people may have forgotten we are even fighting over there!
