First Things First - STOP Social Security's Bleeding
By Ed Henry

Everybody talks about how Social Security has been producing more funds than it needs, but that this will not last, mostly because of the upcoming baby-boomer retirement myth. Yet, no one asks how much the supplemental retirement system has been producing in excess of its needs, how much surplus it generates all of the time. And the numbers are enormous.

I've been following these surpluses for years and have even written a "how to" article on finding them in the Treasury's web pages for yourself. Neither republicans nor democrats will easily give up these slush fund surpluses that they've been enjoying. In fact, they will not even mention them. (Read the rest here)

Misandrist Marriage Movement
By Carey Roberts

Maggie Gallagher is in hot water over her $21,500 contract with the Department of Health and Human Services, money received while her editorials were singing the praises of the Bush Administration's marriage initiative. Sounding slightly clueless, Gallagher explained, "Did I violate journalistic ethics by not disclosing it? I don't know. You tell me."

But Gallagher's problems go beyond this ethical faux pas. While I support traditional marriage, there's a fundamental problem with Maggie Gallagher's approach.

In a February 2000 column called "False Valentines," Gallagher decried the problem of partner co-habitation. In that article she hijacked Elizabeth Barrett Browning's ageless sonnet of romantic love, and turned it into a feminist screed. (Read the rest here)

Libertarian Commentary on The News

Imagination is a wonderful thing, even if sometimes it is nothing but daydreams. With our deteriorated and imperfect world, we can still imagine how things SHOULD be. These views and opinions are those of the author, not necessarily of TPoL, FND, RRND, or your neighbors. Use carefully and responsibly, refrain from mixing with certain foods or beverages without examining potential synergistic effects. WARNING: Liberty can be fatal! (See end notes)

GOP tries to rally support for Bush budget
Tampa Tribune
"White House officials and Congress' top budget writers tried rallying support Tuesday for President Bush's $2.57 trillion budget, but cracks in Republican unity showed as lawmakers digested the plan's proposed spending cuts. 'Stay in the game the rest of the year,' House Budget Committee Chairman Jim Nussle, R-Iowa, urged colleagues who have voiced support for paring the deficit since the budget's release Monday. 'Don't claim you want to cut the deficit in one breath and demand we spend more in the next.' Joshua Bolten, Bush's budget chief, told Nussle's committee that the president 'won't hesitate' to veto excessive spending bills -- which he has yet to do in four years." (02/08/05)

Talk, talk, and more talk. The budget is actually HIGHER than last years, but is claimed to be a cut because the increase is less than the inflation rate. No wonder a good many Republicans are looking askance at it – the gorge rising in their throats. But too many want someone else's bull gored (or cut) – they will "fight to the death" for their own pet programs and for their take-home doggy bags of pork. Nice, fat-laden, probably rancid pork. It is enough to make you sick, isn't it?

At the same time, it is nice to dream of a coalition in Congress willing to, say, "decimate" the budget and cut it down to a "mere" $2.30 trillion this year, and do it again and again. Imagine what a reduction in government borrowing of 250 billion dollars would do to the economy! (Read the rest of the Commentary here)
