Symbol Over Substance

EU group wants hammer & sickle banned
Fox News
"A group of conservative European Union lawmakers from eastern Europe called Thursday for a ban on communist symbols, including the red star and the hammer and sickle, to match a proposed EU ban on the Nazi swastika. The group from Estonia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic said the communist symbols should be included in any ban because of the suffering caused by Soviet-backed regimes in eastern Europe. 'We would like to have an equal treatment of the other evil totalitarian regime of the communist system,' said Jozsef Szajer, an Hungarian member of the European Parliament. EU Justice and Home Affairs Commissioner Franco Frattini has proposed a Europe-wide ban on display of the swastikas and other Nazi symbols as part of a campaign to combat anti-Semitism and intolerance." Talk about symbol over substance! At a time when socialism is taking over more and more of Europe, they want to hide the symbols. Pretend it will go away then. Right. (Read the rest here)

Libertarian Commentary on The News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2004

Lots of things to get frustrated and ticked off about this weekend, with Congress running amok and government’s stupid tricks all around us. Worldwide, we see the problems that develop because people trust government to be something it is not, or problems made worse because government is “here to help.” That’s my opinion, at least - if not necessarily that of anyone else, including TPoL or FND or RRND.

Congress is in town - keep track of your billfold!
Gonzales: Senate votes 60-36 for confirmation
MSNBC
"The Senate voted Thursday to confirm White House counsel Alberto Gonzales as attorney general, setting aside Democratic complaints he helped craft questionable U.S. policies on the treatment of foreign prisoners. Gonzales, 49, a longtime friend who was President Bush's legal counsel when he was governor of Texas, became the first Hispanic to be the nation’s top law officer when Vice President Dick Cheney swore him in shortly thereafter in the vice president's office in the West Wing of the White House." (02/03/05)

A lot of people, including libertarians, are calling this a vote for torture and perjury, but I am sure that did not enter the minds of anyone in the Senate, either for or against Gonzales: to them, that is government as usual.
