Men Feeling Blue On February The Forth

Two national health organizations are teaming up in an Orwellian effort to pander to women and mislead the American public about the threat of heart disease.

First, for those of us who care about such things, the facts. According to the latest government report, men die an average of 5.4 years before women.

The main reason for that disparity in life expectancy is heart disease. Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women alike.

But men's risk of dying from heart disease is far greater than women's - about 50% higher. These are the actual numbers from the recent report, Health, United States, 2004: The adjusted heart disease death rates in 2002 were 297 per 100,000 persons for men and 197 for women. (Read the rest here)

Boomer Myth - The Great Fear Story For Social Security

76 million baby-boomers looming on the horizon and about to wreck havoc on the supplemental retirement system, Social Security.

That’s the story we hear over and over as a reason for immediate Social Security reform of some type. Since one of Alan Greenspeak’s speeches a few months ago, the number has even increased to 77 million baby boomers.

What the fear mongers never tell you is whether these figures are births “above normal.” But they certainly imply that it is when they speak of hordes of people about to begin retirement and draining the Social Security insurance program every worker in America has been contributing towards and where they each already have a “personal account.”. My apologies for missing this column yesterday, due to some unforeseen circumstances. But onward and upward. Well, the election is over in Iraq - the voting part at least, and we await the counting. Meanwhile, other news continues, as we start a new, fresh month! At least, that’s my opinion, not necessarily that of TPoL, RRND, or FND..

China: Authorities harass Zhao mourners

"The family of deposed Chinese leader Zhao Ziyang expressed frustration and unhappiness over having had little say in the funeral arrangements of the reformist leader, a day after it took place under heavy security. Zhao was purged and kept under house arrest for 15-and-a-half years until his death for opposing the bloody military crackdown on the 1989 Tiananmen Square protesters. But even in death, he was unfree. Hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes police guarded the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery Saturday, and kept out hundreds of people who turned up to pay their last respects to the man who had been China's premier and Communist Party chief." No surprise - too many people today want to forget that a Communist regime is by its very nature highly authoritarian, totalitarian, and however it is chosen, a dictatorship. It does not change its spots. (Read the rest of the Commentary here)
