Should Iran Be The Next Target?
By Ivan Eland

In a recent article in The New Yorker, investigative journalist Seymour Hersh reports that the Bush administration has conducted missions using military special forces on Iranian territory in an attempt to find Iran’s nuclear facilities for possible later targeting with air strikes or commando raids. Such military actions would have dire consequences for the United States and the Middle East.

As unbelievable as it might seem, despite its disastrous martial adventure in neighboring Iraq, the administration appears to be once again leaning toward using the military option to deal with a country that it believes is attempting to get nuclear weapons. U.S. government intelligence agencies believe that Iran is still three to five years from getting such a weapon, but given their recent track record of failure on the Indo-Pakistan nuclear tests, the September 11 attacks, and Iraqi weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programs, no one can be sure if they are correct. Using this information, however, as the government must, targeting of Iran is over-the-top—given that an Iranian nuclear weapon is not imminent. (Read the rest here)

Libertarian Commentary on The News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2004

In looking back in history, we find we can count our blessings in many ways - both physical and spiritual (liberty being a part of the spiritual) - too many tyrannies, unbelievable by today’s mores and standard, existed in the past, and “government” was even more murderous in so many ways in ancient history. But we have become accustomed to a very high degree of freedom, and so even small losses of liberty dig at us, just as they did to our forefathers in Scotland, England, the original twelve States, Texas, and elsewhere. And because we know that small losses soon add up. There are too many of these “small bites” in today’s news for me to feel comfortable. At least, that is my opinion, and not necessarily those of TPoL, FND, RRND, or anyone else.

Supreme Court rejects attempt to halt Schiavo murder
Tampa Tribune
"The Supreme Court refused on Monday to step in and keep a severely brain-damaged woman hooked to a feeding tube, all but ending a long-running right-to-die [sic] battle pitting her husband against her parents. It was the second time the Supreme Court dodged the politically charged case from Florida, where Republican Gov. Jeb Bush successfully lobbied the Legislature to pass a law to keep 41-year-old Terri Schiavo on life support. The decision was criticized as 'judicial homicide' by Mrs. Schiavo's father, Robert Schindler, but applauded by her husband, Michael Schiavo, who contends his wife never wanted to be kept alive artificially. The court's action is very narrow, affecting only Schiavo." (01/24/05)

With the millions killed by governments or with government permission every year (40 million unborn children in the US alone since 1973), it may be useless to complain about one more, but like other courts in the past, this current set of Supremes has shirked its responsibility to the cause of liberty once more, condemning an innocent woman to die by their failure to act.
