January 18, 2005 When I first heard that Leonardo DiCaprio would portray Howard Hughes on film, I thought, no way, this kid's too much of a skinny geek who looks like he could go cuckoo at any moment. Then I thought, wait a minute … Howard Hughes was a skinny geek who went cuckoo. Yet isn't that when Hollyweird ahk-tors are at their best - when no ahk-ting is required? It is unnerving at times how much DiCaprio actually looks like Hughes; especially when he's brooding, glaring and generally letting the bats in his belfry take free flight. But we all know the differences; DiCaprio is a heartthrob Hollyweirdo and a darling of the left who campaigned for John Botox Kerry and is an environmental activist and that's why he's important. The real Howard Hughes was merely a wealthy white guy who founded and ran huge corporations, and we all know how crazy they are; and that's why he is not important. The Aviator could easily be retitled A Beautiful Mind meets The Great Waldo Pepper. The plot of The Aviator flies like this: Howard goes from certified visionary/genius to certified crackpot/lunatic; but you already knew that if you were over 30 or not a current student in publik skool. U.S.
Foreign Policy: Question All Assumptions Post-World War II U.S. foreign policy, including that of the Bush administration, has been based on certain assumptions about the nature of the world. Unfortunately, most of those assumptions are suspect. The most notable assumption is that if the U.S. government (USG) does not dominate the globe militarily and ensure security through wanton armed interventions, the world will fall apart. Yet the USG did not even exist for the vast majority of recorded history and the world got along just fine using what scholars call a balance of power among great powers. In fact, often times the USG has invaded other countries and removed their governments for no good reasonfor example, the U.S. invasion of Panama in 1989 and the recent invasion of Iraq. Other times, the USG has used the CIA to remove a foreign countrys more democratic government and replace it with a less democratic one that was friendlier to U.S. interestsfor example, in Iran in 1953, Guatemala in 1954 and Chile in 1973. Apparently President Bushwho, according to Time magazine, reads only books that reinforce his prejudicesloved a recent book that argues that U.S. hegemony has deep roots in American history. That statement would be true if one inserts the words post-World War II before the words American history. For most of U.S. history, the United States did not seek hegemony over other countries and pursued a policy of deliberate independence from most overseas disputes. (Read the rest here)
Libertarian
Commentary on The News In many states, legislatures are meeting, while in DC, the Congress is busy making mischief - do you know where YOUR legislator is tonight? Whos pockets he (or she) is in? Whose pockets are being riffled by your legislator or his/her buddies tonight? In my opinion, they are all up to no good. Dont worry, just like all the other opinions in this column, that is mine, and not necessarily that of TPoL, RRND, FND, or anyone else! Zhao
Ziyang, 1919-2005 Reuters has a starry-eyed rememberer of this Communist Chinese autocrat, who didnt let the tears in his eyes keep him from participating in hundreds of government actions intended to tyrannize the people of China and any opponents to his rise to power, or those whom he followed as he rose, such as Mao. A fifteen-year life sentence, especially in comfortable house arrest, hardly is sufficient punishment for a dictator like this man, even if he repented (which is, actually, rather doubtful). Mama's Note: But it seems that his repentance was what he was being punished for. They are all crazy, of course. (Read the rest of the Commentary here)
