All Government Is Evil
By Michael Gaddy

I am an anarchist, as defined by Robert LeFevre. I believe that government contributes nothing of value to the individuals it governs. No matter what political party is in control, like a leech or a tick, government attaches itself to the body of freedom and feeds on the life-giving blood of that body, while imparting the Lyme disease of corruption, fear, pestilence and war. Finally, that decaying host/body of freedom and liberty is totally destroyed by the parasite called government.

People of a wicked and criminal nature are drawn to the stench of government like flies to manure. Even those of integrity who engage in service to the State find themselves administered and controlled by those who are wicked and criminal. They eventually learn, that if one is to advance in this government service, they must take on the characteristics of their leaders. (Read the rest here)

Is That Really Necessary?
By Lady Liberty

There is a certain member of my family—though I suspect she's not unique to my family alone—who is not a particularly nice person. If she bluntly tells you how terrible she thinks you look in that new sweater you love, she insists it's only because she knows how much you value honesty. If she compares you to other, more favored family members and pointedly finds you lacking (these favored members fall into and out of favor with some regularity, by the way), she does it because she wants to motivate you to greater accomplishments. If she criticizes you, it's because she loves you and wants others to love you, too (this woman actually once told me that she made a point of "taking people down a notch" so that they wouldn't "get a big head," a technique she apparently considers her generous contribution to ensuring that others stay admirably humble and thus more lovable).

Since her motivations for being not so nice are pure (at least in her own mind), she excuses herself and her behavior even as the rest of us don't. But whatever else we think about her, this woman will likely never change. She's been that way for years. (Read the rest here)

Libertarian Commentary on The News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2004

The new year is upon us, and events are moving rapidly to a crisis around the world. But sometimes, it is the little things that hit us hardest. At least, that is my opinion, not necessarily that of TPoL, RRND, or FND.

Dave Berry Retiring?
All Headline News
Popular humorist Dave Barry said Sunday's column for The Miami Herald was his last - maybe. Barry, who has written humor columns for three decades, including 22 years at the Herald, says he's holding out the possibility of a return.

The new year is a time of change, and this is a shocker. The most read libertarian in North America (and the world), Dave will be missed by all of us. His commentary has provided what has so often been lacking in the libertarian movement - a sense of humor. Although there are many others out there (like Claire Wolfe, to name just one) and many others with the talent if not the forum, Dave has both talent, dedication AND forum, and his retirement is all the greater loss, as a result.

"Buy American" Hurts Americans
By Sheldon Richman

President Bush has a plan to address the so-called trade deficit, which worries people so much. According to the wire services, Bush said, “People can buy more United States products if they’re worried about the trade deficit.”

That will appeal to many Americans in a nationalistic fever. What could make them feel better than passing up inexpensive, high-quality, foreign-made products and buying pricier, American-made counterparts? But it won’t help the economy or the American people in general.

Frankly, I can’t tell whether President Bush is kidding or not. His phrase “if they’re worried about the trade deficit” implies that he doesn’t seriously mean what he said. But either way he has erred big time. If he means it, then he has fallen for one of the silliest fallacies imaginable. And if he doesn’t mean it, then he is deliberately propagating that fallacy. A president should be more careful. (Read the rest here)
