Sneak Attack
By Lady Liberty

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. 2,388 people—mostly military personnel, but including civilian men, women, and children—died. At the same time, the American Pacific Fleet lost much of its capabilities. President Franklin Roosevelt, speaking on the airwaves to a shocked nation, called December 7 a day that would live in infamy and subsequently set into motion US involvement in World War II.

There are some who say that Roosevelt knew about the attack in advance and that he let it happen so as to have an inarguable reason for getting into a war the American public was none too keen on joining at the time. Perhaps that's just a conspiracy theory; perhaps it's true. Either way, the public at large was appalled first by the attack, and then by the discoveries of what was really happening behind the gates of Adolf Hitler's concentration camps. Kill Missile Defense Now
By Ivan Eland

The most recent among many testing glitches of the Bush administration missile defense program should remind us that this exorbitant and heavily politicized effort should be scrapped. Until September 11, in the eyes of conservatives, the litmus test for patriotism was support for missile defense. Now they have moved on to view backing for the troubled Iraq War as the badge of armchair courage. Yet the 9/11 attacks demonstrated that the missile defense program did not address the most severe threats facing the United States.

The most serious threats to the U.S. homeland won’t arrive by missile. They’ll likely be attacks using either conventional means—as on 9/11—or nuclear, biological or chemical weapons smuggled into the country by ship or delivered by small aircraft. Terrorists are unlikely to have the technology to develop the long-range missiles that a missile defense system is designed to intercept using other missiles or lasers. (Read the rest here)

Libertarian Commentary on The News

Social Security rejects marriage papers
Raleigh News & Observer
"The Social Security Administration is rejecting marriage documents issued for heterosexual couples in four communities that performed weddings for gay couples earlier this year. The agency is rejecting all marriage certificates issued in New Paltz, N.Y., after Feb. 27, when the town's mayor began marrying gay couples, according to town officials. Certificates issued during the brief periods when Asbury Park, N.J., Multnomah County, Ore., and Sandoval County, N.M., recognized gay marriages are also being rejected." (12/19/04)

A very curious phenomenon, and apparently based on the credibility of the documents and the agencies in question - what is not mentioned until deep in the article is that the Social Security Administration IS accepting “civil union” documents from Vermont AND “homosexual marriage” documents from Massachusetts, so this is not the blatant discrimination that it appears to be painted as - rather, they are not accepting documents from agencies which have demonstrated that they are not following the applicable state laws. This does NOT, to me, appear to be federal meddling, but rather, a federal agency PROPERLY deferring to state laws and agencies.

Mama's Note: Just what business either state or feds have in anything to do with marriage, or any peaceful activity between consenting adults, is still the question. The "Social Security" scam is another good question. Did you read Ed Henry's latest articles on SS? It's a good place to start if you don't understand how thoroughly we are being robbed and lied to.
