The FDA is Going to Kill Me
by Sunni Maravillosa

I awoke with a thundering headache -- not an everyday occurrence, but not unusual for this time of year, either. The good news is that I've a good idea of how to treat it. The bad news is that I'm unable to.

I should be more precise -- it is possible for me to treat it. If I want to pay a certain type of person (one with the proper permission slip) an inflated amount of money, there's a decent chance I'll get permission slips to buy the substances that have always resolved this problem for me in the past. Notice that I said "decent chance". I've gone to the right type of person before, only to have my history ignored, and other (newer, more expensive) things suggested. Sometimes I've tried them, and sometimes they've worked -- for a while. It seems that, once or twice a year, my problem gets so bad that nothing else works but these two substances. One is an antibiotic; the other, a steroid. (Read the rest here)

Home Cooking Outlawed for Child Safety
by Bob Wallace and Cat Farmer

The government announced today that it intends to crack down severely on home-cooking parents in the near future, and introduced a new plan to feed schoolchildren intravenously. With so many approved prescription foods on the market as a result of recent food safety legislation, government experts feel that unregulated street foods are dangerous for consumption by minors.

"People still think they can feed their children anything without government approval," said Dr. Buford T. Nerdlinger, a spokesman for BARF (Bureau of Appetites, Regurgitation and Flatus). "Government intervention is necessary to save lives and liberate young people from oppressive waistlines."  (Read the rest here)

Hunting for Answers
By Lady Liberty

Every year, the residents of any number of states enjoy hunting seasons on various wild game. One of the most popular prey in North America is the white-tailed deer. Hunting is a sport enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children, the vast majority of whom take their hobby very seriously and who act with the responsibility necessary for success and safe enjoyment of their hunts. Although there are a few injuries and fatalities annually, the rates are quite low given the vast numbers of those who go hunting every year. There were just 93 fatalities in all of North America in 1998, a third of which were self-inflicted, according to Hunting Accident Statistics for Canada, the United States, and Mexico as compiled by the International Hunting Education Association. (For contrast, consider that an average of 37 skiers or snow boarders die annually in the United States, or that an average of 207 people per year die in ATV mishaps in America, neither sport of which involves "deadly weapons.") Rumsfeld’s Muddy Quagmire
By Ivan Eland

Triumphant after his “mandate” from the people, President Bush, to date, has announced the retirement of eight cabinet members. Although many of these government officials were lackluster at best, the cabinet’s worst performer is still in his seat. Donald Rumsfeld should have been the first cabinet officer fired, but the unflappable Secretary of Defense has been asked back for a return engagement in Bush’s second term.

The secret to Rumsfeld’s “success” (in Washington, a bureaucrat’s first goal is to survive turmoil)—like that of John F. Kennedy or Ronald Reagan—is not competence or contribution, but charisma. (Read the rest here)

Libertarian Commentary on The News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2004

Tuesday is the 63rd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Even though it is increasingly clear that the USA’s leaders of the time must accept much of the blame for the success and the timing of the attack, and the actions against Japan that led to it, it is important to remember that many of our ancestors fought and died in that war for the cause of liberty - both of our nation and of that of many others. Honor their memory by fighting, properly informed and capable, for that same liberty today, not just for ourselves, but for others as well. In my opinion, that will see freedom and liberty more quickly restored than alienating all of these people, however misguided they may be. The views and opinions contained herein do not necessarily reflect those of TPoL, RRND, FND, or the USG.

New York: “Free speech is definitely not free”
CNN
An elementary school bus driver was fired after sharing a statistic she had read about embryonic stem cell research with students, then encouraging them to tell their parents about it. Julianne Thompson, 42, told students in November that actor Mel Gibson had said in an article that embryonic stem cell research had not produced a single human cure in 23 years. Some parents complained and school officials in the Buffalo suburb fired the driver. …"I learned that free speech is definitely not free," Thompson said.

Another example of a school which so “prizes” our liberties that they take them away from us - no doubt, lest we misuse and lose them.
