Abstinence Vs Sex Education
By Carl F. Worden

There is this silly argument going on right now over whether it is better to teach sexual abstinence, or to teach sexual “responsibility” to our teens.

One side sees teaching the benefits of abstinence as the cure-all for unwanted teen pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, while the other side promotes enhanced sex-education for the same remedy.

Both sides are wrong.

First, responsible, caring and loving parents do not “teach” their children about abstinence from sex before marriage: They enforce it. If you don’t want your underage teen daughter to get pregnant, you simply don’t allow her to. Which part of that don’t you get??

If you love your daughter, you never allow her to be alone with a young man of interest to her. You let her be with him privately. You let her talk to him privately. You let them get to know each other. But you never allow the two of them to get into sexual mischief out of your supervision. (Read the rest here)

Free Isn't Around Now, Folks
By Dorothy Anne Seese

When this intrepid soul ventured forth to buy her first computer it was April, 1997, and the hottest thing being sold had a 28K modem and a two-gig hard drive.  Like wow.  As I was instructed by a wannabe geek buddy to find my way around the internet as safely as possible, I got a free antivirus system that seemed to work fairly well.  The only bug I picked up was sent by someone I trusted.  (We know better now.)  All kinds of software was free, new geek types were anxious to make their mark by allowing the public free access to their programs in the hope someone would hire them as software developers, maybe in response to a challenge to write such a program, or just for the heck of it.

Beyond the world of computers, we had come out of the age of trading stamps, which was the big freebie deal in the 1960's until the mid 70's, and some merchants gave away glassware, dishes, linens and other goodies in exchange for cash register tapes.  (Read the rest here)

Libertarian Commentary on The News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2004

I’m starting out today with a couple of news items sent by friends. Some border on commentary themselves, but it is important to have these and to comment on them. At least that’s my opinion (but not necessarily anyone else’s or TPoL or FND or RRND!) By the way, if you haven’t already, I know that Mama Liberty and Tom and crew at FND/RRND would appreciate you telling them how much you appreciate THEM - preferably a nice note with a small amount from Paypal or e-Gold attached - again, my opinion, not necessarily theirs! (Thanks, Nathan, but PoL is not set up to accept donations. Those so inclined are urged to contribute to any of the other sites that need support. MamaLiberty)

US, Israel should take UN seriously?
CNS News
The United States, which funds nearly a quarter of the United Nations' annual budget, should rethink its relations with the world body, much of which stands opposed to President Bush's view on the global war against terrorism, an expert said here this week.

The “expert” here, from the internationalist Hudson Institute, Anne Bayefsky, doesn’t explain how to do this - but at least does not support the UN itself. She points out how a majority of the UN is so opposed to the US and Israel that they refuse to condemn even more gross crimes against liberty, such as those committed in Sudan, Zimbabwe, and North Korea, but does not point out the obvious: the withdrawal of the US from the UN would soon render the organization completely ineffective, even in the eyes of most Europeans and Asians.

A Baker’s Dozen Tips to Preventing Home-Invasions
By Nathan A. Barton © 2004

This is the first in a series of how-to articles for lovers of liberty and members of “The Price of Liberty.” Nationally, even in “safe” suburbs and rural areas, home invasions are becoming more common. Not just your property but your life is at risk.

Got Arms? : Burglars fear an armed and trained householder more than anything else, as a review of the web can tell you. Get and know how to use a pistol for self-defense, and make sure you keep it where you can find it in emergency. Practice regularly.

Goodies: One simple reason your house is chosen is someone tipped off the home-invader that you have valuables. Your friends or children or baby sitter might have unintentionally bragged. Close your curtains and drapes regularly, and don’t show things off where they are easily visible from the outside or to callers at the front door. (Read the rest here)
