Libertarian Commentary on The Day's News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2004

Last Friday was supposed to be “Black Friday”, when all the retail outlets get into the black (as compared to the red) from the huge holiday sales. Well, news-wise, it wasn't quite as slow as Thursday, but we saw some interesting items on which to provide commentary - not necessarily the views of anyone but the writer!

Georgia: Libertarian elected Dade County Executive
The Chattanoogan
"I would like to be the first to offer congratulations to newly elected Dade County, Ga., County Executive Ben Brandon. Mr. Brandon won yesterday's runoff in a landslide, with 66 percent of the vote to Allan Bradford's 34 percent. What makes this achievement especially remarkable is that Ben Brandon was running as a Libertarian and defeated not one, but two, major party opponents. (The Democrat was eliminated after finishing third in the November 2 general election.) This is believed to be the first time in Georgia history that a third party candidate has emerged victorious over Republican and Democratic candidates in a partisan race." [Editor's note: Yes, this is an op-ed by Trevor Southerland. We couldn't find a "straight" news article on the subject. I wonder why - TLK] (11/24/04)

News was spread of this via the LP-chairs newsgroup, but that was it. You’d think that local papers, at least, would have carried it. Dade isn’t one of the biggest counties in Georgia, by any means, but this is still (in an otherwise disappointing election year) a piece of good news, for the people of Dade County and for the LP.

WHO: Flu pandemic inevitable
Reuters
"Every country in the world must come up with a plan urgently to deal with an inevitable influenza pandemic likely to be triggered by the bird flu virus that hit Asia this year, a top global health expert said on Friday. 'I believe we are closer now to a pandemic than at any time in recent years,' said Shigeru Omi, regional director for the Western Region of the World Health Organization (WHO). ... The WHO fears the next flu pandemic could infect 25 to 30 percent of the world's more than 6 billion people and kill up to 7 million of them. Two U.S. firms are working on a vaccine, but neither is likely to have one ready until March, well after the cooler Asian season in which the virus thrives best." (11/26/04)

When it comes time to blame people for not having vaccines ready, expect the drug companies to be vilified, if not crucified, for this. I blame the government for virtually destroying this industry. Of course, this is WHO talking - the UN organization that is almost as effective as the FDA, the USPS, or TSA. Isn’t it time to get government out of health care?

Mama's Note: Long past time, but don't expect it soon. The most important thing for everyone to realize and remember is that those who are susceptible to the flu are people who have poor nutrition and inadequate immune systems. No vaccine is going to overcome that very well anyway. Historically, those who died from the flu have been those who were elderly, fragile children or infants, and those who had serious chronic or acute illnesses already. The best thing anyone can do to reduce their risk of a serious case of the flu is to improve their nutrition and immune system as fast as possible. Smokers, especially those who are also exposed to high levels of air pollution, are also at higher even risk because the respiratory system is already stressed and the defense mechanisms don't function as well. Just a thought... (Read the rest here)

Lead Blockers - Someone's Got To Do It!
By Ted Lang © 2004

Little credit is given to those tough, brawny individuals who run interference and take the hits for leading and protecting the ball carrier in football. They are just thought of as non-thinking brutes, offensive linemen who "open the holes" for the stars of the game: running backs, quarterbacks and wide receivers.

But there is another kind of lead blocker, and I admit to those as being my personal favorites. Instead of being tough and brawny, they are tough and brainy, and run interference for truth with their ideas and their courage. They deliver truth and facts to open holes in walls of sanctimonious politically correct pap, propaganda falsehoods and sacred cows designed to dumb-down the public.

And there is no greater hypocrisy on God's Earth than the attacks by "organized Jewry," that term having been e-mailed to me by an orthodox Jewish Rabbi, than the constant unrelenting assault upon the Christian religion by these "Jews" and their Christian Zionist supporters. Anyone who criticizes the fascist and brutal police state of Israel, is immediately smeared with the label anti-Semite by the "Jewish" anti-Defamation League, headed up by so-called "rabbi" Abraham Foxman.
