November 26, 2004 Even though I am not a big fan of George W. Bush and did not vote for a Bush elector in either of the past two elections, I am sick and tired of democrats and their stooges in the media claiming President Bush was the one who made the determination that Saddam Hussien had weapons of mass destruction and he alone is responsible for the war in Iraq. Democrats would have us believe that the president, as commander in chief, has the constitutional authority to move the military forces of the United States against any country he chooses and President Bush targeted Iraq, under the guise of weapons of mass destruction, to steal their oil for his buddies. Many Americans, who were unfortunately allowed to cast a vote in the 2004 presidential election, have this same belief concerning the constitutional powers of the president. Following the close of the Federal [Constitutional] Convention of 1787, the commander in chief powers of the president, like many other provisions of the proposed constitution, were discussed at length in various publications. In Federalist Essay No. 69, Alexander Hamilton compared the military powers of the president to that of the King of Great Britain: (Read the rest here)
The Constrained
and Unconstrained Visions Thomas Sowell, in his book, A Conflict of Visions, writes about what he calls the "unconstrained" and "constrained" visions. The unconstrained vision is "leftism," which, according to Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn in Leftism Revisited, got its start during the French Revolution (and he claims, with damning evidence, one of its founders was, of all people, the Marquis de Sade). The constrained vision is "rightism." Unfortunately, these divisions even exist among left-libertarians and right-libertarians. "One of the curious things about political opinions," writes Sowell, "is how often the same people line up on opposite sides of different issues. The issues themselves may have no intrinsic connection with each other [Yet] the same familiar faces can be found glaring at each other from opposite sides of the political fence, again and again." Libertarian
Commentary on The Day's News for Wednesday Hope all readers and staff (staff?)of TPoL had a happy Thanksgiving! Although we see a regular procession of news about the threats to liberty in our lives, we need to periodically stop and count our blessings and be thankful for the freedoms we do have and keep, and sometimes gain (or regain). There are so many things to give thanks for, whether it is to God or to fellow humans (past and present), related to our freedom. As we've seen in recent days, no matter how bad things are getting here in the United States, there are still people all over the world longing for liberty who would rather be here than where they are Cuba, China, Vietnam, Iran, Mexico, yes, even Canada and Australia. No regular news digest from FND or RRND today because of the holiday, but here are a few tidbits from friends and my own searches, to share with everyone. My opinion (above and below) is mine and not necessarily that of my friends, my enemies, or TPoL, RRND/FND, or your local electron slinger! Attempt
