Thanksgiving Day, 2004
Susan Callaway, Editor

I've had a very hard time hearing and seeing the cheery "Happy Thanksgiving" greetings and messages this year, and am finding it almost impossible to say those words myself. That's not because I don't think we have anything to be thankful for, of course. I count my blessings every day, and am more grateful than ever for all of them, but I can't put on a cheery face and forget all of the things going on right now that make this anything but a time for joyful celebration.

How can we "celebrate" when our government, in our name and with our money, continues to murder and torture people around the world, especially in Iraq and right here at home? How can we bask in a holiday mood when that same government is plotting even more bloodshed and destruction, both abroad and here at home? How can we go on with "business as usual" with economic collapse hanging over our head like an avalanche?

I can't. (Read the rest here)

Patriarchal Power Or Marxist Mischief?
By Carey Roberts

Poor Arnold Schwarzenegger had to find out the hard way. Fresh from his stirring speech at the Republican convention where he endorsed President Bush, the governor came home that night knowing he would have some explaining to do.

For wife Maria Shriver is known to be of the liberal Democratic persuasion. Sure enough, Maria put Arnold in the doghouse -- and that meant no sex for a fortnight.

According to socialist-feminist theory, a vast anti-female conspiracy known as the “patriarchy” controls the social order. When you ask a feminist to explain that mind-boggling statement, she invariably points to the fact that the great majority of elected officials are male. And according to the Marxist analysis, those callous male patriarchs look out only for their own kind, leaving women neglected and downtrodden. (Read the rest here)

A Good Way to Spend Thanksgiving?
By Sheldon Richman

U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona has a swell idea for how we should spend the Thanksgiving holiday. He’s declared Thanksgiving the first annual National Family History Day. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, “Americans are encouraged to use their family gatherings as a time to collect important family health history information that can benefit all family members.”

As tempting as it sounds, I doubt that families throughout America will be eager to put aside football and the traditional reminiscing over turkey dinner to catalogue the diseases that have afflicted their recent and distant ancestors. But there is a much more serious reason to be wary of Carmona’s suggestion. (Read the rest here)

Libertarian Commentary on The Day's News for Wednesday
By Nathan A. Barton © 2004

Freedom is the right to express and act on your opinion, with the liberty to do so provided you don’t initiate force against your neighbor. Well, unless you are lost, you are here voluntarily - and you don’t HAVE to accept my opinion - which isn’t necessarily that of TPoL or FND or RRND or anyone else! (Of course, you’d be silly NOT to, but again, that’s just my opinion!)

Despite soaring deficits, Congress delivers the pork
Dodge City Daily Globe
"Despite soaring deficits, the government spending plan awaiting President Bush's signature is chock-full of special items for industries and communities. Consider $443,000 to develop salmon-fortified baby food, or $350,000 for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Lawmakers from both parties who approved the $388 billion package last weekend set aside plenty of money for projects certain to sow good will in their home districts. The time-honored practice flourished despite the ballooning deficit, less money for federal programs and rising unease about how government will finance the futures of Medicare and Social Security." (11/23/04)

Power and money - money and power: twin engines that keep the government growing, and make a mockery of the Founders’ division of powers. Every dollar transferred from one pocket to another is a further diminution of our liberty, and until we can convince at least a third of the electorate that this is so, libertarians will NOT stop the ever-faster destruction of the federal Union and our freedoms. Like an addiction to crack, the impact worsens the longer the addiction is fed.
