Since the election between George W. Bush and John Kerry is razor close and the State of Colorado is contemplating a new law that would split its electoral votes, there is a possibility the 2004 election will result in a tie. When I told a group of people discussing all the ways John Kerry can win the presidency that they had better hope the election does not result in a tie, their euphoria turned to confusion. After I told them that George W. Bush would win the election if there is a tie in the Electoral College vote, they looked at me in disbelief and asked how someone could possibly predict the winner of a tie. I told them it was simple--the answer is in the Constitution. (Read the rest here)
The
Horrors of Government And I saw a beast arise out of the lagoon of oil. He had two horns like a devil, but he spoke as a preacher Halloween season is here; little devils, pirates and assorted ghouls will come trolling for treats. A few will get tricks; someone I know had fun one year hiding the candy, and holding out a plate of raw Brussels sprouts first. One little girl reportedly cried. I did indeed vote for Bush II. As I have offered many times before in this space, starting with Bush's cave-in by not going after Clinton, at least verbally, for trashing the White House and looting the Nation's silverware, I almost immediately noticed that salvation would not be forthcoming. American
Exceptionalism Many Americans, like the citizens of dominant nations of the past, believe that their way of life is superior and should be shared with other peoplesoften at gunpoint. Lately, this American exceptionalism has assumed even more pernicious forms. Whether called the Bush I administrations New World Order or the Clinton administrations Engagement and Enlargement or the Bush II administrations effort to liberate Afghanistan, Iraq, and perhaps the entire Middle East, using military force to bring democracy and market economies to errant peoples has been a staple of both Democratic and Republican administrations since World War II. Similarly, the Roman, British, Spanish and other empires believed they were civilizing conquered lands with their ways of doing things. (Read the rest here)
