When the
Ready Reserves are called back to active military, we've got a very serious
military manpower shortage. The problem is that the older and paunchy
Ready Reserves are quite literally the bottom of the barrel before the
United States military has to rely on a draft to fill its manpower needs.
So far, around 30% of the Ready Reservists called back to active duty
are refusing to answer that call.
No, this isn't a Bush bashing piece. This is a stark look at reality.
If the draft was so out of the question, as both Bush and Kerry have promised,
how come 18 year-olds are still required to register for it? Hmmm?? How
come we have draft boards at all? Did you hear either candidate suggest
we do away with registration and the draft boards? Why not? If the draft
is so far out of the realm of possibilities, why not save a few bucks
and do away with them altogether?
The same guy who claimed Saddam had weapons of mass destruction and planned
to use them imminently, now flatly claims the draft is completely out
of the question. The same senator who unconstitutionally voted to give
the president the power to declare war, says the draft is out of the question
-- but might not be if Bush is re-elected. Why shouldn't we believe them?
This is why:
Something like 43% of all troops currently serving in Iraq are National
Guard and Reservists. 37,000 of all American military personnel are not
even citizens of the United States. They are mostly Mexican nationals
trying to earn American citizenship.
Liberals tout how much of a surplus President Bill Clinton left Bush,
but they don't mention what it cost to "save" all that money.
Clinton gutted the military big-time, so if your kid eventually gets drafted
and is subsequently mutilated or killed in some exotic place, the blame-game
starts with Bush's predecessor.
The truth of the matter is that we are one headline away from a national
military draft. If North Korea invades South Korea, we'll need a military
draft to stop them. If Iran follows America's fine example and stages
a "preemptive" military strike on American forces in Iraq via
guerrilla mode, we'll need a draft to stop them. If Americans start rioting,
looting and burning down our cities, the National Guard will have to be
called back, and a military draft will be needed to replace them in Iraq
and Afghanistan.
Murphy's Law says that everything that can go wrong, will go wrong at
the worst possible time.
Guess what time it is right now?
