September 09, 2004 Exclusive to The Price of Liberty

I cannot resist the temptation to be the first to report on the success of Boston T. Party’s first Jamboree in Crook County, Wyoming, as part of his rapidly growing Free State Wyoming project in the beautiful and wide open spaces of northeastern Wyoming’s gorgeous Black Hills.

While snow covered many of the mountain ranges in Colorado and even New Mexico, and rain soaked the eastern and southern Black Hills, the gathering of two dozen or more members and people interested in the FSW project had to endure a single night of rain showers, with three more days of crisp late-summer days, bright starlit nights, and soft breezes. The location chosen was a wonderful place - a peaceful mix of ponderosa pine forest and mountain park, with mysterious rock formations, drifting flocks of wild turkeys, and a serenity little disturbed by the sounds of gunfire as Boston conducted handgun defensive and long arm defensive training, with various contests and just plain plinking.

The attendees came and went in typically libertarian manner - at all hours and without any set schedule. The entire gathering was also typically libertarian, with visiting in the evenings around a large fire, sharing of meals, political and other discussions conducted all around tents, fires, behind the firing line, and elsewhere in the 50-some acres across which the campsites, range, central meeting place and parking was scattered. More than ten miles off the nearest paved road (but easily driven by even a little “New” Beetle and other two-wheel drive vehicles, it was a perfect location for a few days of rest, planning, and discussion, as well as just sharing and getting to know one another.

During the day, if not participating in one of the always-excellent training courses for firearms that are the special talent of Boston T. Party, people wandered around Crook County and nearby areas. Coming or going from the Jamboree, people apparently availed themselves of the opportunity to explore the entire State of Wyoming, looking into communities and business or job opportunities, comparing the three counties initially selected, and getting to know an area often very different from their family home states. Among those attending were people from as close as 80 or 100 miles away (including several lovers of liberty already IN Wyoming) and people from (at least) Minnesota, Texas, Arkansas, Maryland, Nevada, Colorado, and Arizona. Discussion about how to implement the entire thing, as well as about land and property currently already available for purchase in the area, was lively.

At present, there are properties available for sale in all three of the counties selected, especially Crook and Weston Counties. These properties range from town lots (with or without houses of all sizes and ages) in the major towns, to 5- or 10-acre subdivisions at various distances out of town. There are 40-, 50 acre or larger properties (often with very nice houses), up to ranches of 1000 to 3000 or more acres. A number of businesses and properties with potential for business use are also for sale in both counties. (In fact, businesses are for sale in Aladdin, Beulah, and Four Corners - three of the smallest towns in the counties, but with great locations.) At least one out-of-state libertarian family has already purchased property in Crook County.

Though laid-back, it was a well-planned get together, with the “highlight” banquet consisting of barbecued chicken and buffalo-burgers on the campfire Sunday night, with some excellent made-on-the-spot cole slaw and watermelon for dessert. One participant, a well-known libertarian, from the Beehive State, was especially recognized for his help in putting everything together. A large banner of the FSW logo was unveiled, and of course, the Gadsen Yellow flag flew over the site.

It was a great time, and you won’t want to miss the next one!

People officially connected with the FSW project (including Boston himself) will fill in details of ideas and plans hatched, and the present writer in no way represents the FSW, or has any authority to release any information, personal or otherwise.
