How Does Gun Ownership Help?
By Fran Tully

Before I answer her specific questions, I want to make a general argument about how gun ownership can help people.

Gun ownership is like wrestling in water - it levels the playing field. A 110 lb. woman who pulls a gun out of her purse can instantly stop two 250 lb. drug crazed rapists. Gun ownership allows citizens the ability to protect their life and property from criminals. Police will rarely be in a position to stop a rape, a mugging, or a car-jacking. In these situations, only an armed female stands a good chance of surviving unharmed.

Even a grown man, unarmed, is no match for a group of hardened hoodlums intent on hurting him or taking his property. However, a single gun in the hands of someone who is not afraid to use it can quickly quiet the most obnoxious hoodlums. (Read the rest here)

The Wolfman of Abu Ghraib
By Ted Lang © 2004

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then one that I simply cannot get out of my mind is the photograph showing high and mighty Deputy Secretary of Defense, Paul Wolfowitz, visiting the Abu Ghraib torture prison. In that photo, Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski is standing to his right as he brusquely stomps through an opened cellblock gate. What precisely was a deputy secretary of the United States Defense Department doing at a prison, the inmate population of which was made up mostly of randomly arrested and kidnapped young and middle-aged male civilians, teens and children? Most were civilian detainees and not even prisoners of war. (Read the rest here)

Cynical Presidential Candidates
by Sheldon Richman

There is a simple reason why so many people despise politics. They can see that it is little more than a despicable grab for power and that most candidates will say anything, avoid saying anything, and "reinterpret" their own previous words to be elected. The current presidential campaign already abounds with examples.

Take the controversy around Democratic candidate John Kerry’s time in Vietnam. (I will not call it "service," unless that is to mean service to the corrupt Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon. America was not served by anything that went on there.) (Read the rest here)
