26, 2004 There is something, at least for me, very fascinating in such adventures that allow a small, secretive group of individuals to pool their talents to tackle seemingly insurmountable odds and win in doing so. The group plans carefully, clearly defines the end objective, identifies the impossible obstacles, and then figures out a way to successfully defeat each challenge in order to successfully accomplish the mission. What’s even more fascinating about such highly motivated and efficient groups is that they work! There is, however, yet another dimension to a small group taking on a “mission impossible;” their reasons and their motives must be on the side of good, and their talent and stealth deployed to empower good over evil. This morality allows any creative approach and methods that may be questionable. And of course, somewhere in the corners of one’s mind, it was known that the stereotype for such covert assignments of international espionage and secret activities was the Central Intelligence Agency. Fighting evil is kind of impossible, and that’s where the recognition of fiction manifests itself. Good is always out in the open for all to see – it never needs to operate in secret. Secrets are only normal when either tyranny predominates, or truth inhibits action. It is under such circumstances when good must go into hiding and becomes the “underground.” So if an evil, secret, group gets the upper hand over a formerly free people, it is of course not an objective to be either desired or celebrated. But small, secret groups whose methods and intentions are only to benefit Mankind are accepted, even if the fiction of such operations presents somewhat of an obstacle. The popularity of James Bond movies serves as a good example. Everyone knows that no one man can be that intelligent, that physically adept at the martial arts, a connoisseur of the world’s greatest wines, food, literature, and be able as well to accomplish all those unbelievable feats and acrobatics. The fiction in these movies is over the top – but no one cares. It’s the adventure and the complexity of the plot that entertains, as well as the concept of one man against towering odds. An example of a bad group that started small and ended big was Adolf Hitler’s beer hall buddies who formed the Nazis, culminating in World War II. The reality of evil allows no room for fiction. The fiction of good intentions allows no room for evil. When a favorite TV series is immediately sensed as fiction, as opposed to hokum, the viewer excuses the fiction and is fascinated instead by the covert operations. Can such a small group succeed? The reality of a small, secret, evil operation has always fascinated lovers of mysteries and adventures. How and when will they be uncovered? And if a fiction writer can pit two small secret operations against one another, the evil one intent on either world destruction or domination, and the other dedicated to saving the world, then a very popular and successful piece of fiction will evolve. It makes the fiction even more acceptable because the world obviously would panic if knowledge of such a secret conflict ever “leaked” out. Where are those thrilling days of yesteryear, when individual heroes and their sidekicks kicked the horse manure out of a small, concentrated group of bad guys and evildoers at their hideaway or rogue ranch? Where are the heroines of yesteryear when girls were girls, sweet, charming and pretty, and not shemales kicking muscle-bound evil males four times their size in the crotch and out karate-chopping and out shooting them? Such fiction is Hollywood’s shoddy, insulting approach to making a social statement: Women are exactly the same as men. Hollywood cowboys and westerns were once a great staple of film entertainment, introducing young American boys to what is expected of them and what being an American was all about. It had to do with being brave, resourceful, honest and moral, and standing up for not only your own rights, but for the rights of others. Your aim young man, is to be like them, a rugged individual that’s honest, strong, and able, as an individual or as the leader of a small but well-intentioned group, to conquer evil and to stand up to injustice. Is such history taught in schools anymore? Is history taught at all? Is such a message shown on television – and if it is, is the group a government or police agency? And the only private version of such a group is a bunch of lawyers? So return with me now, to those thrilling days of yesteryear, out where a friend was a friend, a gun was a tool, and one guy wearing a white hat and riding a white horse with a sidekick solved all our problems. Check out Chuck Anderson’s site and his dedication to an America of the past. And even as technology began to explode, we still needed to fear the small evildoers: The Mysterious Dr. Satan; The Crimson Ghost; The Scorpion; The Dragon and a host of other singular bad guys. But on a grander scale, all of Earth was at risk in 1936; and no, not just from Hitler, Tojo and Mussolini. There was Ming the Merciless; but not to worry – we had Flash Gordon, Dr. Zarkov and Dale Arden on our side. Tony Lo Bue’s site is an inspiration that allows those of us who cherish what it meant to be American to continue to do so. Sure these old movies, serials and westerns are dated; but so are all the positive attributes and characteristics of a society where lying politicians and POW torture is now accepted. Are honesty, morality and rugged individualism all dated as well? Then guess what else is dated! So enjoy Lo Bue’s site and the inspiring music from Jews and Germans who ran from Hitler and helped inspire those that built this great nation: the great Franz Waxman; Hans J. Salter; Heinz Roemheld and others; all self-reliant and rugged individualists, who, just like my parents, rejected Hitler’s brutal socialism and war-mongering police state. One guy with a website. If Chuck can do it, and Tony can do it, so can you and I! And if not, learn to learn from, and to also honor, our glorious past. Do this so you and yours will have a future in freedom. Nothing is impossible – we can and will turn things around. Begin by starting with yourself, the only important judge and real governing entity in your life. Accept the mission! Theodore E. Lang>>
