Will They Ever
Learn? The state of Ohio has a problem. On August 3, special elections were held around the state. On the ballots were more than 100 requests from school districts for tax levies. Historically, school funding has been well tolerated by voters who seem to think that a "yes" vote is "for the children." This time, however, three quarters of the levies failed. One Ohio newspaper called the results a "massacre." Of course, the histrionics began the morning of August 4. Published articles warn of significant cuts to extracurricular activities, employee lay-offs, and a down surge in the quality of education. Many districts are scrambling to get another try at a levy on the ballot in November. Analysts - from both sides of the issue - are dissecting the tallies and talking about "what went wrong." Feds with guns
bolster Air Marshals Mama's Note: Do we really need more federal busybodies? The whole sky marshal thing is like putting blindfolds on people, then saying they need seeing eye dogs. There are plenty of people in this country who are educated in the use of handguns (and more would be if they didn't have the nightmare of getting the "permission slips" - where it's even possible). There is no sound reason for anyone but passengers, in full possession of the means to defend themselves, filling airline seats. (Read the rest here)

Of Conscience: The Republican Rift Widens Letters
to the editor (from the Medford Mail Tribune) Ive been a Republican all my life. My dad was a Republican all his life. As far as I know, his dad was, too. And Ive been a conservative Republican since Goldwater in 64. But in November, Im going to vote for Kerry! I can hardly believe I just said that. I believe the Bush administration is the worst thing to happen to this country in many, many decades. I considered not voting, but that simply wastes my vote. The only way to defeat Bush is to vote for Kerry, which is scary because, frankly, his liberal record frightens me to death. (Read the rest here)

Hunter: Collateral Damage American Independence Day has come and gone, along with the traditional boom and glare of fireworks that bring joy to many kids, young and old. Picture two such of the younger children: Adorable little girls just six and four years old respectively, Mikayla and Brittany. Imagine their anticipation as the big day approaches and they look forward not only to the beloved fireworks, but also to the arrival of their favorite uncle Jeff, whom they haven't seen in months. Now picture the adorable little girls' disappointment because a suited goon in Ohio wouldn't let Uncle Jeff come see his family. Yes, Mikayla and Brittany are just two more victims of the Ashland County, Ohio prosecutor's office. Call them "collateral damage," more innocents caught in the cross-fire as the run-amuck prosecutors pursue their vendetta against Jeffrey "Hunter" Jordan. (Read the rest here)
