Libertarian Commentary on The Day's News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2004

The views expressed in this column certainly shouldn't keep you from forming your own opinion of the day's events, and sharing them with others! These are mine and not necessarily anyone else's! For more news, click here.

1- VP-wannabe Edwards promises 'victory' in Iraq
For the millions of Americans opposed to the war, this just makes another point on which there is "not a dollar's worth of difference" between the two old parties, and the four people trying to keep/get the crown. And frankly, Kerry-Edwards have less chance of "winning" than the current folks do.

2- Justice Dept panel concludes Edmonds' firing was retaliatory
Why even bother to do an internal investigation? I expect this to be swept under the rug, when instead a grand jury should be looking not just at the original charges, but the people who retaliated and supported the initial cover-up.

3- 9/11 panel clears way for new airline passenger snooping system
This means just as much as the rest of the committee's recommendations, about what all the investigative panels convened during WW2 to look into, and place blame for, Pearl Harbor. It makes good press, but CAPPS II will stand or fall based on more political matters than this recommendation. Given the revelations about what was known and allowed that day, right now I would expect the TSA's ineptitude to allow, say, M. Noriega, F. Castro, O. Bin Laden, and S. Hussein to all board a flight together, without any challenge - while the TSA goons were busy strip-searching the Brigham Young University cheerleaders or something.

Please note: All feedback is forwarded to the author. Most of them would be happy to respond. If you wish to receive a response to your feedback, you must include your email address in the body of the comment section at the bottom of each page. Not all comments can be answered, but if you don't include an email address, we have no way to reach you.

Unfortunately, for some reason unknown to me, the feedback is not being posted to the comments page anymore. I've asked ZooT, our tech editor to look into it, so hopefully it will be fixed soon. Just remember, our "shoestring" is very, very short so we must depend on volunteers for all technical repairs. Thanks for your support and patience. MamaLiberty

Report Omits Key Player—Foreign Policy
By Ivan Eland

Although the 9/11 commission’s investigation has won praise in the media for being bipartisan, on balance it has not made us safer. The commission discovered new information to rewrite the history of the Sept. 11 attacks, uncovered government incompetence that should make Americans wonder if those attacks could have been prevented and made some useful recommendations. But the panel avoided the most important question surrounding the attacks—their underlying cause. (Read the rest here)

Free Hunter: Collateral Damage
by Carl Bussjaeger

American Independence Day has come and gone, along with the traditional boom and glare of fireworks that bring joy to many kids, young and old.

Picture two such of the younger children: Adorable little girls just six and four years old respectively, Mikayla and Brittany. Imagine their anticipation as the big day approaches and they look forward not only to the beloved fireworks, but also to the arrival of their favorite uncle Jeff, whom they haven't seen in months.

Now picture the adorable little girls' disappointment because a suited goon in Ohio wouldn't let Uncle Jeff come see his family. Yes, Mikayla and Brittany are just two more victims of the Ashland County, Ohio prosecutor's office.

Call them "collateral damage," more innocents caught in the cross-fire as the run-amuck prosecutors pursue their vendetta against Jeffrey "Hunter" Jordan. (Read the rest here)
