The Lesser Evil vs. The Greatest Good
By Lady Liberty

The 2004 election is now only three months away, and at the height of summer, the campaign rhetoric continues to heat up. We're inundated with negative campaign ads; we're flooded with media reports of who is campaigning where; and most of us are left shaking our heads over the futility of finding even one candidate that's wholly acceptable. It's that lack of acceptable candidates over the course of many years now that's had most of us shrugging our shoulders and resignedly casting a ballot for the lesser evil, and which has finally come to mean that some no longer go to the polls at all.

Pollsters are everywhere asking potential voters their preferences, and with every poll, the race between the two major party presidential candidates seems to stay neck-and-neck. But other opinions have started to filter out this election year, and some are heartening. Much as Ralph Nader apparently siphoned votes from those on the left who didn't think Al Gore was quite left enough, there are candidates in the Constitution and Libertarian Parties who could very well do the same this year to George W. Bush (Nader is, of course, back in the race but so far hasn't managed to get onto any state ballots). Gun owners - traditionally Republican voters - can't bring themselves to vote for a Democrat, but large numbers are threatening to stay home this year because they can't bring themselves to vote for George W. Bush, either. And John Kerry, while he's not facing any real threats from alternative party candidates or any overwhelming competition from the Republican Party, can't manage to scare up any real support for his campaign, either. 1- SpaceShipOne schedules first Ansari X Prize attempt
All right! Let the countdown begin. While a long way from a "Free State Space" Project, this may be the next rung on the ladder! Thanks to Sunni for starting the day with an upbeat announcement!

2- U.S. to get a 'liberties czar'?
How funny - I thought that was what we had a Supreme Court and fifty states for. But it is a rather backhanded warning that (1) the increased governmental powers are unprecedented in US history, and (2) even the blinder-ridden politicians and lackeys that made up that commission aren't blind to the dangers of the so-called War on Terrorism on the liberties of the Union.

Polly Folly - Taxpayers Always Lose
By Ted Lang © 2004

If it weren't so completely absurd, as well as so symbolic of the police state society we've been progressively conditioned to, it would be beyond amusing. Think about it: the people of Boston, the town where the first major public tea party protesting intrusive government was held, and where the first SWAT-team type "massacre" took place [only 5 killed as opposed to 80 at Waco], will now host and be highly inconvenienced by the Democratic National Convention's grand old party.

How can this debacle be deemed a party? Why is it necessary? All the candidates have been selected and both political parties have exactly the same platform. And how can it be suggested as being a major inconvenience? The beleaguered urban serfs and street people have been subjected to the overbearing beneficence of government over the last several years of civilized progressiveness. (Read the rest here)

If you wish to receive a response to your feedback, you must include your email address in the body of the comment section at the bottom of each page. Not all comments can be answered, but if you don't include an email address, we have no way to reach you.

Unfortunately, for some reason unknown to me, the feedback is not being posted to the comments page anymore. I've asked ZooT, our tech editor to look into it, so hopefully it will be fixed soon. Just remember, our "shoestring" is very, very short so we must depend on volunteers for all technical repairs. Thanks for your support and patience. MamaLiberty

Report Omits Key Player—Foreign Policy
By Ivan Eland

Although the 9/11 commission’s investigation has won praise in the media for being bipartisan, on balance it has not made us safer. The commission discovered new information to rewrite the history of the Sept. 11 attacks, uncovered government incompetence that should make Americans wonder if those attacks could have been prevented and made some useful recommendations. But the panel avoided the most important question surrounding the attacks—their underlying cause. (Read the rest here)

Free Hunter: Collateral Damage
by Carl Bussjaeger

American Independence Day has come and gone, along with the traditional boom and glare of fireworks that bring joy to many kids, young and old.

Picture two such of the younger children: Adorable little girls just six and four years old respectively, Mikayla and Brittany. Imagine their anticipation as the big day approaches and they look forward not only to the beloved fireworks, but also to the arrival of their favorite uncle Jeff, whom they haven't seen in months.

Now picture the adorable little girls' disappointment because a suited goon in Ohio wouldn't let Uncle Jeff come see his family. Yes, Mikayla and Brittany are just two more victims of the Ashland County, Ohio prosecutor's office.

Call them "collateral damage," more innocents caught in the cross-fire as the run-amuck prosecutors pursue their vendetta against Jeffrey "Hunter" Jordan. (Read the rest here)
