Libertarian Commentary on The Day's News
By Nathan A. Barton © 2004

The opinions and views expressed in this column reflect those of the writers, editors and columnists therein [{STOP PUSHING! It's my turn to run the fingers!!!}{NO, you did it this morning! Now I get to!}{Oh, why don't you all just be quiet and let me SLEEP!}] and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of TPoL, its bosses, minions, wee folk, officers, directors or employees (well, Susan wishes), FMN, FND, or much of anyone else.

1- 9/11 terrorists stopped by security, allowed to continue
If you ever wondered what could be trusted to government, and government contractors, now you know - not a single blessed thing. And why didn't this come out on the 12th of September 2001? Remember, "We're here to help you! We're from the government."

2- TSA's baggage screening falls short
Every day, think about how many people are getting past the "Thousands Standing Around," just like those five did on that Pentagon plane on Bloody Tuesday. It is time, past time, to allow people, starting with pilots and stews and right on down to baggage handlers and passengers, to be prepared to defend themselves, and not depend on mercenaries, WG scale or not. Trust Gramps And Ignore The Polls
By Ed Henry

Public opinion polls have always been deservedly suspect in the research world and viewed only as tolerable on a basis similar to the Nielson ratings – it's not good research, but it's the only thing we have.

The culprit has always been the expense of getting a statistically representative sample of the American public according to Census data. The reliability you see expressed as plus or minus some percentage of error or simply written off as "not scientific."

To avoid this massive expense every time they want a survey, the big opinion research houses like Gallup have set up panels. These are paid panels they return to time and again with different questionnaires, often by telephone, and carrying an obvious built-in bias. Although respondents are encouraged to express their true feelings, the fact that they are being paid often makes it more like a high school test than anything with valid emotional depth. Please note: All feedback is forwarded to the author. Most of them would be happy to respond. If you wish to receive a response to your feedback, you must include your email address in the body of the comment section at the bottom of each page. Not all comments can be answered, but if you don't include an email address, we have no way to reach you.

Unfortunately, for some reason unknown to me, the feedback is not being posted to the comments page anymore. I've asked ZooT, our tech editor to look into it, so hopefully it will be fixed soon. Just remember, our "shoestring" is very, very short so we must depend on volunteers for all technical repairs. Thanks for your support and patience. MamaLiberty

Gun Control Harming U.S. Troops
Jon E. Dougherty, NewsMax.com

Is it possible for bad domestic law to be a detriment to our fighting forces overseas – even to the point of getting some soldiers killed? Absolutely, say veterans, who want lawmakers to fix the problem ASAP.
According to a report in the July issue of Soldier of Fortune magazine, many of the ammunition magazines for the M-16/M-4 family of rifles used by troopers, along with 9 mm magazines for sidearms, are increasingly failing because they are either old or of poor quality.

The result, say troopers, is that ammunition fails to feed properly – a situation which can turn deadly in a hurry during a firefight.

'Varmint' Rifle Needs to Go

Add to the problem the fact that the M-16 family of weapons utilizes .223 caliber (5.56 mm) ammunition, which has proven too small and light for war. (Read the rest here)

Free "The Hunter"

Free Hunter: Collateral Damage
by Carl Bussjaeger

American Independence Day has come and gone, along with the traditional boom and glare of fireworks that bring joy to many kids, young and old.

Picture two such of the younger children: Adorable little girls just six and four years old respectively, Mikayla and Brittany. Imagine their anticipation as the big day approaches and they look forward not only to the beloved fireworks, but also to the arrival of their favorite uncle Jeff, whom they haven't seen in months.

Now picture the adorable little girls' disappointment because a suited goon in Ohio wouldn't let Uncle Jeff come see his family. Yes, Mikayla and Brittany are just two more victims of the Ashland County, Ohio prosecutor's office.

Call them "collateral damage," more innocents caught in the cross-fire as the run-amuck prosecutors pursue their vendetta against Jeffrey "Hunter" Jordan. (Read the rest here)
