2004 As the trial of my good friend, Jeff "the Hunter" Jordan, draws near, I wonder what the citizens of Ashland County think justice is. Is it justice to prosecute a man for carrying a means to defend himself as he was traveling on highways known nationwide to be targeted by the Ohio sniper? Is justice served by trying a man for a crime that is no longer a crime under Ohio law? Is it just for the Ohio state legal system to recognize an individual's out-of-state driver's license, but not other licenses? Or would justice be better served by dismissing all counts against an individual who has never used a firearm against another individual -- indeed, who has no criminal record -- and who was harming no one as he traveled home from a Christmas visit to his family? It puzzles me why county Prosecutor DeSanto is spending taxpayers' dollars on a case that most reasonable people would agree shouldn't be coming to trial. Mr. Jordan's actions were never in violation of the U.S. Constitution -- the highest law in this country; they are no longer in violation of Ohio firearms law. If Mr. DeSanto continues his pursuit of the case, I hope that the citizens of Ashland County recognize what would truly serve justice in this case, and end the embarrassing harassment of a man whom most of them would find a very good neighbor.
