To catch you up, Nick Gombos was on his way home around 10:00 PM back in March. He stops to pick up a classified newspaper at a Ray’s Market in Williams, OR, and finds a chicken huddled in an open crate.
Nick takes the chicken home to care for it.
A neighbor tells Nick the chicken is a “regular” homeless chicken at the market, so Nick calls the market to let them know he’s taking care of the chicken. Apparently, an employee at the market complained to Josephine County Sheriff Deputy Matt Tripp, who called Nick and ordered him to return the chicken to the parking lot, where it could resume dodging cars and eat scraps thrown to it by store employees and passersby.
Deputy Tripp apparently didn’t like being told “No” by Nick, so he manufactured a criminal theft complaint against Nick for theft of a chicken no one claimed ownership of. Tripp kicked a judge out of bed at midnight and got the bleary-eyed judge to sign a defective search warrant. Nick was dragged out of bed in his red Speedo underwear at 1:00 AM by deputies driving four patrol vehicles, arrested, and the chicken was returned to the store parking lot.

Anyway, since then, the store manager has admitted that Ray’s Market never owned the chicken. Not only that, but the chicken showed up about three weeks earlier and stayed only because people would feed her there. “Speckles” was a free-range hen, with no leg band and no real home or pedigree. For all anyone knows, Speckles was born in the wilds of Oregon’s vast range of public lands.
So after Nick gets taken to jail under false arrest and a defective search warrant has been served on his property, Manager Nate McCully of Ray’s Foods calls the Josephine County DA to ask that all charges be dropped against Nick, since they don’t own the chicken, and had no basis for filing the criminal theft complaint.
Big problem for the Josephine County mob: Nick Gombos is going to own a large chunk of JoCo for conspicuous and obscene violations of his civil rights, so what does DA Clay Johnson decide to do? The idiot refuses to drop charges against Nick, and instead charges him with resisting arrest, barefooted and wearing only his red Speedos (read thong!) all the way to jail. This is yet another good reason not to allow cops to charge people with resisting arrest, since any cop can say someone resisted no matter how cooperative they are. Resisting arrest is probably the most widely abused criminal charge that dirty cops use to “punish” citizens they don’t like.
So just today, Nick goes to the Josephine County Courthouse to pick up some papers. Nick finds himself surrounded by sheriff deputies, who tell him he is banned from the courthouse, and he will be arrested if he ever sets foot in the courthouse again. That’s a problem, since Nick is scheduled for a court appearance this coming Monday, May 24th.
Nick is an especially gentle guy, and he has done nothing to warrant being banned from the public courthouse, but that is what he was told – and he recorded the entire episode on a tape recorder he held in full view of the deputies who accosted him. Voice analysis of the tape will ultimately reveal the identities of the specific deputies involved.
Kathy Dean, Nick’s wife, called the Oregon State Police, who refused to come to Nick’s aid. We are currently involved with bringing in the FBI and the Federal Justice Department to examine this case.
Most of you are probably shaking your heads in wonderment over the seemingly silliness of it all. Not so! What is actually happening in Josephine County, Oregon is a semi-violent changing of the guard.
No, it’s not over just a chicken. The powers that be in Josephine County, Oregon have held sway for many, many years. They have violated their sworn oaths, they have planted evidence and they have committed perjury. They have used excessive force with abandon. They are corrupt from top to bottom. They have become a law unto themselves to the extent that they have lost all cognizance of right and wrong, law and order. They honestly believe they are still the “Good Guys”.
What is happening right now in Josephine County, Oregon, is a challenge to unfettered, government tyranny by a group of local citizens who have had enough. If the “Powers” lose this round, they know they’ve lost their power, and what Nick Gombos experienced today at the Josephine County Courthouse was an act of pure desperation on their part. The deputies were attempting to incite Mr. Gombos to commit a crime out of frustration, and it didn’t work, God bless him.
Nick and his wife, Kathy, are cool customers. They won’t allow themselves to be drawn into a trap. The only way these corrupt Josephine County law dogs can have any power over Nick and Kathy is if they can get either or both of them to violate the law. Short of that, and short of perjury and planted evidence, the local cops are powerless to thwart what is building to be the most massive and devastating federal civil lawsuit judgment ever entered into the annals of civil rights litigation. It portends to utterly destroy the lives of the guilty, and to establish, finally, a local government of the people, by the people and for the people of Josephine County, Oregon.
This case portends to break the back of local corruption, and that is why the scumbags hiding behind badges and power are willing to lay it all on the line over a damn chicken. I kid you not, and they are going to lose.
By the way, some stupid kid dropped by the Ray’s Market one night recently, found the chicken and wrung its neck just for the hell of it. He left Speckles dead and rotting at the front door so the employees opening up in the morning couldn’t miss it.
