2004 Reading this headline this morning in my local news rag, it became most apparent to me that the good Senator and his colleagues must have missed my article titled Building an Empire with a Politically Correct Military-You just cant do it. But, then again it should be obvious to all that the Patrician class in America no longer pays any attention to us serfs, especially since they have discovered recounts, programmable electronic voting machines and the courts actually decide elections. The enlightened folks of the ruling class just do not understand the functions and necessities of a dedicated fighting force. But, then again, how could they? Most have never served. They have tampered with the military, insisting that political correctness be the cornerstone of all aspects of training. They just cant understand that every hour spent in a sensitivity class or diversity studies is an hour lost in learning the skills that may someday save your life or the life of your fellow soldiers. If the graphic pictures we are seeing of prisoner torture and abuse are any indication-- they sure as hell arent working anyway. It is common knowledge in the Army that if you are in a supervisory position and give a female soldier a bad evaluation, your career is toast. Regardless of how they handle or dont handle their job, they are assured of a great evaluation. Plug that into the morale factor of our troops and then check your espirit de corps meter. If you believe for a moment that both male and female soldiers are not aware of this discrepancy, you are only fooling yourself. Today we see millions and millions of dollars being spent by the Defense Department trying to lure young people into the military. Think of the millions spent on Madison Avenue marketing firms that come up with ridiculous phrases like An Army of One. Looking at the pictures now in the news one must ask, one what? Then there are all the racecars bearing the logo of different branches of the military. In NASCAR alone it would appear all services are represented, except possibly for the Coast Guard. Take the time to see how much it costs these days to put your logo on one of these cars for a season and you will quickly realize how much of our tax dollars are going to recruit cannon fodder. Regardless of how much they spend, the military is having an enormously hard time luring folks into their fold. Todays young people have heard too many stories of deployment after deployment and stories of stop loss. A prime example would be the young man whom I met a couple of days ago who said he joined the Army for three years after graduating high school back in 1999. He was leaving this past Sunday for his second tour in Iraq. Makes no difference that his contracted tour was up in 2002; he has become a slave to fight for the freedom of someone he doesnt know and who doesnt want him in their country and will kill him if the opportunity presents itself. Ill bet he doesnt sign up again - if he ever gets out, that is. Thanks to the Internet, the story of the debacle that is todays military is getting out to the masses. Eight years of destruction by the Clinton Administration and the colossal lie of the Bush Administration that help is on the way have been revealed for all who take the time to avoid the state controlled media. Many have seen the contempt in which the Bush crowd holds veterans. The recent act by this administration, taking court action to prevent the POWs who were tortured at the hands of the Iraqis in Desert Storm I from receiving compensation from the Iraqi assets now held by our government, is proof positive of exactly how Bush "supports" the troops. Im sure Bush and Cheney would rather this money go to their brethren at Halliburton. They also see through the hypocrisy of not showing pictures of the coffins of service personnel killed in action but showing a flag draped coffin of a firefighter from 9/11 in a campaign ad. Senator Campbell may be sincere when he wonders how some folks who torture prisoners in Iraq got into the Army, but it is not a mystery to many of us. Perhaps if he were aware of this TRUE story that happened to a senior training NCO in Arizona, he might better be able to answer his own question. This NCO had a higher than acceptable washout rate of his trainees. An officer admonished him that this rate was unacceptable, as too many soldiers were being lost-especially after all the money and time that was being spent on recruiting. No matter how he tried to explain this to the officer, he could not get across the point that many of the trainees were just not good enough to do the job that would be required of them. Finally, in desperation, he asked the officer if he would interview one of his remaining problem soldiers himself. The officer agreed. The NCO brought in a young soldier and asked him, in front of the officer, what he wanted to be when he left the Army. The soldier said he wanted to work for NASA. The officer was impressed until the NCO asked him to tell the officer what he wanted to do at NASA. The young man said that he wanted to "do the countdown and proceeded to count backwards from the number 10 to show his expertise. Now, can anyone wonder why we have soldiers who are stupid enough to engage in acts of torture and wanton sex acts with prisoners and photograph themselves doing it?
