Operation:
Suntan In Robert Heinlein's classic 1951 science fiction novel "The Puppet Masters", a slug-like alien race capable of attaching themselves to human being's spinal cord and controlling their minds secretly invades earth. A shadowy intelligence operation detects the alien menace, and led by the protagonist "Sam" and his partner "Mary" manages to defeat them. One of their biggest challenges after they understood what they were up against was preventing infiltration of "Zone Green", the areas known to be free of puppet masters. One of the measures necessary to defeat the alien menace was "Schedule Suntan", ordering uninfected civilians to wear a bare minimum of clothing (or less) so that the slugs would have no place to hide. Desperate measures for desperate times. (Read the rest here.)

T. Party Book Review: Molôn Labé! Molôn Labé! The first novel by noted non-fiction writer Boston T. Party, Molôn Labé! tells the story of a man with a plan to restore liberty to at least one small corner of the United States of America. In the novel, James Preston is a military veteran and a decent man whose faith in the government and the American justice system is severely shaken when a local man goes on trial. The man is accused of a crime Preston doesn't see as being a criminal act, and adding insult to injury is the fact that some on the side of the prosecution are so anxious for a conviction that they step well over an ethical line. Covert
And Collateral Damage We are living in a period of contradiction and hypocrisy. There is hardly a subject anyone can point to and say; this is the country I was brought up to believe in, respect, and trust. If not caused by our leadership, this confusion is at least enhanced by our leadership's refusal to face subjects head-on, honestly, and discuss them openly. For instance, you cannot listen to the witnesses brought before the committee to study 9/11or their interrogators without realizing that "covert" operations to assassinate people perceived as threats is a preemptive policy that's been around for a long time. Alerts! The intransient juror No. 4 in the Tyco case is drawing attention to the role of the jury, as evidenced by Elliot Blair Smith's USA Today column, Lone jurors sometimes hold key to final verdict. It is of course not possible for an outside observer to know whether in some objective sense this juror, or any juror, has a valid objection to a conviction. The juror must be convinced, in his or her individual conscience, that the evidence points to guilt "beyond a reasonable doubt". The juror must also be convinced that no prosecutorial or police hanky-panky has gone on that would compromise the constitutional rights of the defendant. The juror must be satisfied that all the evidence the defense considers relevant and would like to introduce, has in fact been allowed in evidence. Frequently it has not been allowed. And finally, in many cases, the jurors ought to consider whether they are satisfied, as individuals, that the law the defendant is accused of violating, is a just law and is justly applied. If not, he or she is justified in holding out for a "not guilty" verdict. (Read the rest here)
