Liberty
Action of the Week: Those of you who've been following the ongoing saga of Jeff Jordan's arrest (Free the Hunter) and concealed carry case on the Liberty Round Table "Free the Hunter" site, email lists and blogs know by now that the Hunter was arraigned on Feb.2, his speeding ticket trial will be feb. 19 and his concealed carry trial will be on May 27,2004. (For a detailed timeline, from his arrest on December 29,2003, see Timeline.) Activists throughout the world have rallied to help publicize the situation, raise funds for Hunter's legal defense, and provide ongoing moral support (so important when one of "our people" is in the clutches of the state.) There are two schools of thought on how to react when confronted by the "omnipotent cult of the state": roll out your best "slave behavior" and "yassa the massa", hoping for leniency, or, stand up and fight back. Hunter has chosen to fight back, and we, his fellow freedom fighters, should do whatever we can to stand by him, to continue to publicize his case, and rally support. (Read the rest here)
Free Immigration
- Part 1 Few issues seem to divide lovers of liberty in the American Union more than the issue of open borders, and related immigration issues. Although open borders has long been a staple of Libertarian Party platforms, it has been an issue which has kept some people OUT of the Libertarian Party, and has caused them to vote against Libertarian candidates. Even many staunch supporters of freedom have said, at least privately, “I admit I have some reservations about just opening up the borders.” There are some common concerns that come up, and they deserve to be addressed properly and respectfully, and not simply shrugged off as “statism” or some kind of suppressed authoritarian tendency. People who have “some reservations” are not alone, even in the most “radical” parts of the freedom movement. But “open borders” are a very important part of a larger, more general freedom: the freedom to travel, or freedom of movement. (Read the rest here)
States Should
Outlaw Abortion I read a book by Charles Adams called, "When In the Course of Human Events: An Argument for Southern Secession" that has really got me thinking. I believe we've had the wool pulled over our eyes about that war. It is a very good and thorough historical review, and I believe objective; it actually won the National Paradigm Book Award last year - it certainly prompted a paradigm shift in my thinking, a shift which is still moving to the right! I want to promote public discussion of this very important question in light of the topic of that book: Do states have a right to secede from the Union? For liberals, the question must be framed in terms that they will accept: For instance, if the Federal government managed to outlaw abortion and homosexuality, and California, who joined the Union by "the consent of the people" decided to leave the Union by "the consent of the people", should they be allowed to do so? If the Federal government tried to enforce the new laws by force, would it be ethical for California to defend itself against an invading army of "religious totalitarians"? (Read the rest here)
