One For The Hunter
By Catfarmer

Item #1 on my list of priorities this month has been to write an essay about or for Hunter. The basic details of Hunter's encounter with the Ohio police have already been covered, and Hunter isn't free to divulge further details at present for logical reasons. Well, I'll try anyway: I'm a creative writer, not a journalist. Facts all too often resemble a collectivist or officially authorized version of opinions anyway, and I'm an unrepentant individualist. For anyone still unfamiliar with Hunter's story, though, I'll offer a brief synopsis.

Hunter drove home from a Christmas visit with his family in Kansas with a number of weapons in his truck, all of them legally in his possession. He has a license for concealed carry in his home state of New Hampshire, and in several other states as well. The news reports of his arrest make no mention of a previous criminal record, as they most surely would have done if Hunter had a criminal record to mention. The news reports make no mention that Hunter threatened the Ohio policepersons who stopped him for speeding, as they surely would have done if Hunter had said or done anything remotely threatening. Jabberwacky -
Analyzine Lies And Other Nonsense

By Ted Lang © 2004

I’ll admit it. I used to play hooky and not attend services at my church on Sunday mornings in order to catch all the political talk shows. Tony Snow was up first over at FOXNews at around 9:00 a.m. The McLaughlin Group was next on NBC at 10:00 a.m., followed by Tim Russert’s Meet the Press. What really kept me glued to these programs was the hope that somehow, something would come to light to help our nation rid itself of the greatest political scourge to come along in my lifetime; namely, the administration of Bill Clinton.

I was always hoping that something would be said, or something new would be uncovered in these panel forums, that would make a difference and prove beneficial to our nation. A short time back, maybe ten or fifteen years ago, the driving force for news addiction was getting “up to speed” with current events under the banner of “staying informed.” To do otherwise, you’d risk being branded as an uninformed putz by your peers at work, in your neighborhood, the local bar, or wherever. Better Them than Us
by Scott McPherson
The Future of Freedom Foundation

In response to soaring violent crime, Brazil has passed what some are considering one of the strongest anti-gun laws in Latin America, and Brazil’ s pro-gun lobby, backed up by the powerful National Rifle Association, was powerless to stop it. Rather than mourn, however, Americans who fight against "gun control" should see this as a blessing in disguise.

Hoping to curb a homicide rate that puts Brazil’s violent death rate above every other nation not at war, President da Silva signed the aptly termed "disarmament act" during the Christmas week. The new law limits the carrying of handguns in public to police officers, the military, licensed security guards, and hunters; requires a background check for gun purchases; and raises the minimum age for gun ownership from 21 to 25.

But here’s the real kicker: the act requires that a national referendum be held in 2005 to decide on a ban on the sale of handguns altogether. With opinion polls showing that nearly 80 percent of Brazilian adults favor the disarmament act and a handgun ban, the forthcoming referendum will almost certainly pass.

So what is there for gunowners here to be happy about? (Read the rest here)

American Culture and the
Right to Self-Defense
by Jennifer Freeman (Liberty Belles)

If there is one single, defining characteristic about the United States that makes it unique, it is that American people are legally recognized as citizens, not subjects. Citizens are full human beings with inherent rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This also includes the right to self-expression, self-defense, personal privacy, due process, and a whole host of other protections designed to ensure that every American can live free.

This culture of personal pursuit, free enterprise, and rugged individualism has made the United States the most technologically advanced and financially successful country in the world. And we have passed down this culture for generations from within our homes and our schools. It is who we are. (Read the rest here)

Activist Announcement

I have confirmed with the legal team that the next court date -February 2, 2004- is open to the public. So spread the word throughout the land. I'll be wearing a suit and tie, and if I can remember how will even comb my hair. So the spectator value will be pretty high even ignoring the legal niceties.

The appearance is at Ashland County Common Pleas court, which I believe is at 142 W 2nd Street, Ashland Ohio. The proceedings start at 11:30 AM. I shall leave it to the local activists to arrange the details of where and when they will gather. I will be arriving with the lawyers, and probably tied up with them for at least a little while before that to boot. I
suspect I will be told it would be inadvisable to say anything; you know the drill. I would appreciate as big a show of support as we can manage, but remember that we MUST appear polite, respectable, and businesslike.

Feel free to forward this notice far and wide, and should the local activists have questions that they can't get answered on the LRT web page, feel free to email me at this address.
