State Of The WHAT Address?
By Dorothy Anne Seese

nice words ... just words

A fifty-four minute speech informed us about the things we've heard so many times before that it could have been a cut and paste job from previous presidential speeches and press conferences, briefings and comments. From the Republican side of the aisle the applause seemed out of place, and the classic photo ops were of Senator Ted Kennedy's face, along with one shot of Hillary Clinton.

Call it a blown opportunity to make a speech with vision, but a president who has led us into the quagmire in the Middle East was on the defensive on the one hand, and on the offensive against the Democrats, in an election year, on certain issues such as continuation of the USA PATRIOT acts.

Never has George W. Bush sounded quite so hollow about what should have been the state of this union, not the state of the world, the imaginary progress in the Middle East. A good two-thirds of this speech was devoted to the state of the world and "terrorism" -- the war on an ideological premise held by certain radicals who have a deep religious commitment to their form of fanaticism. Free Hunter!
Activist Announcement

I have confirmed with the legal team that the next court date -February 2, 2004- is open to the public. So spread the word throughout the land. I'll be wearing a suit and tie, and if I can remember how will even comb my hair. So the spectator value will be pretty high even ignoring the legal niceties.

The appearance is at Ashland County Common Pleas court, which I believe is at 142 W 2nd Street, Ashland Ohio. The proceedings start at 11:30 AM. I shall leave it to the local activists to arrange the details of where and when they will gather. I will be arriving with the lawyers, and probably tied up with them for at least a little while before that to boot. I
suspect I will be told it would be inadvisable to say anything; you know the drill. I would appreciate as big a show of support as we can manage, but remember that we MUST appear polite, respectable, and businesslike.

Feel free to forward this notice far and wide, and should the local activists have questions that they can't get answered on the LRT web page, feel free to email me at this address.

The Riddle of Steel
by David Hunt, PE

I confess: I occasionally like B movies. One of my favorites is Conan the Barbarian, with the title role played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's juvenile swords-and-sorcery fun, but somehow I never tire of watching it.

Surprisingly, the movie contains some philosophy. At the beginning of the movie, Conan's blacksmith father tells his son that he must learn the "Riddle of Steel." In that era, steel was the strongest material known; raiders attacked Conan's village to obtain steel swords, killing all adults and selling the children - Conan included - into slavery. The leader of those raiders, arch-mage Thulsa Doom (played by James Earl Jones, whose voice alone gives life to the role), searches for steel because he is searching for strength.
