and Group: I like to have my ideas challenged. The libertarian choir's sweet singing is nice much of the time, but I'm getting to the point where I am at least familiar with all the basic arguments for freedom. And although I'm still pleasantly surprised now and again by a pro-freedom connection I'd not come across before (Mark Gillespie's piece on Taoism and freedom being a good recent example), few things outside of complex academic theory really challenge my mind. The
Medical Marijuana Win The recent medical marijuana decision issued by the federal Ninth Circuit Court enforces a states right to overrule the federal Controlled Substances Act of 1970 if certain conditions are met with regard to marijuana use that is recommended by a physician. Among others, one of the conditions the judges stipulated is that the marijuana must not be sold. To a sharp defense attorney, that stipulation is significant and potentially more far-reaching than the Ninth Circuit may have intended.

Politics Away from Money The supporters of campaign-finance regulation, and now a bare majority on the U.S. Supreme Court, are trying to square the circle. They want a vast distributive state in which politicians dispense favors at the expense of others without the appearance of corruption. An inherently corrupt system with no appearance of corruption is about as likely as, well, a square circle. The Court has upheld by a 54 vote the McCain-Feingold law, which among other things prohibits political parties from raising unregulated soft money and restricts issue advertising on television 60 days before a general election and 30 days before a primary.
